I love Ethiopian food. I don't think injera is much worse than any other bread type, here's an offsite link with cals and nutrition info: http://www.fitday.com/webfit/FoodFacts_Outsid e.html
There's also a great Ethiopian restaurant in Oakland around Telegraph and 51st, called Asmara that my husband and I are very fond of (in fact we had our first date there, awww.)
I also went for ethiopian recently and has the most amazing lentils which were pretty healthy. I ran home and looked up the recipe and it's pretty simple once you put the spice mixture together
berberé lentil stew
To make berberé spice mixture, combine:
1 Tbs. ground cardamom
1 Tbs. ground coriander
1 Tbs. fenugreek
1 Tbs. ground nutmeg
1 Tbs. ground cloves
1 Tbs. ground allspice
1 Tbs. cinnamon
1 Tbs. paprika
1 Tbs. turmeric
1 tsp. cayenne
1 Tbs. ground black pepper
1 Tbs. ground sea salt
Store in a cool, dark place.
The stew:
1/2 large onion, chopped
1 + 1/4 cup red lentils
2 1/4 cups water
1 garlic clove, crushed
1-2 Tbs. berberé spice mixture, above
1 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes
Mix lentils with water, garlic, onion, and spices. Cook, uncovered, over medium-low heat, for 20 minutes or until the lentils have softened. Watch carefully and add water if it starts to dry out. Add the tomatoes and heat at least 15 more minutes. Good alone or over whole grains such as brown rice
Club Waizema on Divisidero is supposed to be really good. And there's a place on Valencia by Modern Times bookstore that's really good.
Anyway, I've always thought that Ethiopian food is a lot like Indian food in the sense that they use a lot of oil in all of the dishes. Vegetarian or not. And becuase you eat with the bread instead of a fork, you're eating a handful of bread with every bite.
It is delicious though. So is Indian food. I haven't had either in years. It's sad to be so freaked out by calories that you won't eat anything good.
I love Ethiopian food! We have a vegan Ethiopian restarant here. I kinda had a feeling that Injera was high cal! But you get filled up pretty fast. It's cheap and tasty and healthy. (well i only get gomen (mustard green dip), kik (pea dip), soy curry (tvp in spicy sauce), and ferfer (spicy sauce mixed with injera).
