Does everyone have facebook? ....

Quote  |  Reply

So, i dodged the entire facebook / myspace thing (maybe im getting old?) ... but i keep seeing people my age or older talking about their facebook / myspace!

Does everyone have this? Or are there still people like me who just dont get it / need it?

I've got facebook, but I find it a bit boring. I only go on maybe once a week. A friend of mine who is an RCMP officer told me that they're not good to have, a lot of info gets taken and used for ill purposes.

i have a myspace, but only so that i can monitor my daughter's myspace

LOL That's funny because I got my myspace to monitor my friend's daughter! She didn't want her 'mom' as a friend but allowed me. She made a video called "The World's Dirtiest House" and posted it on youtube and myspace. I told my friend and she about died!  No one likes unexpected guests when your house is messy.. how about having thousands see it! ha

I had facebook for one day.. saw too many people I went to school with and I don't want to talk to them.. plus, it's not user friendly, IMO.  The main reason I like myspace/facebook is to keep in touch with my friends in The Netherlands and Germany and to see everyone's pictures.

Myspace was always something I considered to be custom designed as a way to torture online epileptics. So many myspace pages are filled to the rafters with pulsating imagery and terrible indy band tracks (who will most likely stay indy).

Facebook is actually somewhat usable, and yes, I have a page. Helps me keep track of the peeps we hang out with in jamaica, friends I left on the other side of the continent and whatnot. Birthdays and anniversaries and so forth. Quite handy.

I think a lot of what you're talking about has to do not with Myspace, who by default gives you a basic white page, but with people who have absolutely NO sense of design but go to things like Pimp My Profile and load up their page with every trendy motif and you tube clip imaginable. Instead of TOS agreements, maybe free graphic sites should require everyone to read Strunk & White before using them!

To answer lorik's question, I have a personal Facebook page, and I maintain a Myspace page for my band but don't have a personal one.

yep

and i made her make me the highest security level or whatever

one time she put me on a lower level, but i could tell because i couldn't see all of her blogs anymore, and i made her put me back so that i can see it

i only look at it from time to time and mostly i just want her to know that i might look at it

it's not a good idea for anyone to put stuff on the internet about themselves that they wouldn't want their mom to see

Heh, that might be a bit extreme, but ya gotta admit that myspace pages filled with shooting comets and dancing badgers set to badly done emo-punk fusion is a recipe for a grand mal. I swear some of them look like Cthulhu did the design work specifically to induce the madness.

What do you think the chances are she has multiple accounts? haha

Seems like an invasion of privacy to me.... sure its a "public space", but so is the movie theatre when your on a date (but wouldnt want your mom stalking you there either)

I know i grew up on the internet, and my parents didnt watch me... it would have just gotten in the way of my curiosity (and my parents trusted me...).

I'm into facebook. Got into it a year and a half ago and it's been really, really useful for keeping in touch with friends, especially since I've travelled a lot in the time that I've had it.

MySpace is the poor man's Facebook.

I'm clueless; does Facebook cost money?

My nieces and nephews pleaded with me to get a myspace so they could chat with me on their playing field...I live so far away from all of them I was more than happy to do so as they actually communicate more with me in this venue than normal e-mail.

mommakitty - Face book doesn't cost you anything but your time.  You can get sucked in.

I have facebook to keep in touch with people for networking reasons.  At first i got sucked in now I just ignore requests (both apps and people).  If I didn't talk to you in high school, why would I suddenly develp a desire to correspond with you 23 years later????

My daughter is not allowed to have facebook or myspace.  We routinely monitor her usage of the internet.  I think my husband has actually blocked those from her.  It isn't that we don't trust her, but sometimes she is a little niave and I would hate for her to get sucked into something harmful or have too much of her personal information available.  It was bad enough the first time she got a Viagra ad and one asking if she would "like to be large and go all night" Try explaining that.

No, but there's actually been research done that shows that mostly college educated people are on Facebook and Hispanics, young kids, and those without college educations are on Myspace. This is what the article said. Yes, specifically Hispanics. O_o....

Mhm.  I have both.

My littlest baby sister enjoys myspace so she asked me to make one  of those for her.

My biggest baby sister uses facebook so she asked me to create an account there for her.

My friends all have cell #'s so I don't use it for my connections. My sisters wanted me to make those though. That way when they tell me stories about certain friends I can get a visual, ect. Plus. I'm constantly updated on new photos and stuff. They like me to know where/when they're doing things incase I want to join, ect.

It could be due to different generation too. My generation uses cell phones/texts.That's why I think the OP is so normal for not having one. I can't find any of my friends on facebook or myspace... turns out there is a reason... none of them have one! My youngest sister does myspace she's in high school. She's sixteen and all of her friends have myspace. My biggest baby sister nineteen and in college she uses facebook. It's what all of her friends do.

I was just prompted by sisters into creating both. Myspace/Facebook helps me stay in touch with my sisters, even when out of state. We also have free mobile to mobile but every little bit helps. :) I'm close knit with my sisters.

I have a myspace, but I never log on. I don't have a facebook yet. I'm not exactly sure what the point of them are? I think I'll make one soon! I wanna be cool!

facebook was so much better before they sold out and started letting anyone have one.

now that sketchballs and potential employers can get on and pretend to be anyone, facebook has gone so downhill. not to mention the applications, stalker news feed, and gross new layout.

i think im the only 15 year old girl on the face of the planet without either. it takes way too much time...  and im scared of getting addicted and turning into a mindless teenager..  haha:) not to say that all people with facebook/myspace are mindless....only the ones i know.

it was a good thing her dad and i were monitoring her myspace when she was 14 - i will leave it at that

now she's 17 - i do trust her - i only look at it very occasionally

she uses her myspace pretty actively - has friends in the three cities where we've lived, plus other friends that she's met during summer programs that she's attended - lotsa people to keep up with

it's not impossible that she has another account, but given that her dad is an IT professional and he checks her laptop from time to time, it's safe to say that she isn't using her own computer, which means she isn't using any other account with any frequency

you know, i will just point out that people always say that it's the parents' responsibility to monitor their children's internet use -- and then when a parent does that, you say that i'm invading her privacy -- and if something happened to her, if she became one of those girls who disappears because of someone she 'met' online, then people would tut-tut about how the parents should have been more aware of her actions online

i don't read her diary and wouldn't (unless i feared that she might harm herself - which i don't)

the only reason i check her myspace is to check on OTHER people that are talking to her.

i trust her.  i don't (necessarily) trust them.

Nothing wrong with being a 'guardian angel' mom. :) There are alot of freaks out there. Edited to add: When I was 14 or 15 I think, my parents didn't monitor my internet usage and I was into chat rooms back then (I think every teenager was)... and I had some dude stalk me asking if he could finger me. And I had no idea what that meant back then, I just knew it wasn't good. I wish my mom was around then (though back then I'd probably wouldn't have... rebelliousness and all). I just stopped going to chat rooms, that ended the weirdo-ness quickly. But yes, there are disgusting people out there who actually like to prey on teenage girls.

So I joined facebook and saw lots of people I went to school with. Most of which I hated. I see most of them went and finished college and are doing well. I still dislike them, but at the same time happy for them. But now I feel like poo because I'm 24 and never seen the inside of a damn college. Meanwhile they're 24/25 with a career... and to think I was the honor roll nerd in school/highschool... look at me now. Ugh.
