i have a myspace, but only so that i can monitor my daughter's myspace

o.O.....does she know about that? haha

yep

and i made her make me the highest security level or whatever

one time she put me on a lower level, but i could tell because i couldn't see all of her blogs anymore, and i made her put me back so that i can see it

i only look at it from time to time and mostly i just want her to know that i might look at it

it's not a good idea for anyone to put stuff on the internet about themselves that they wouldn't want their mom to see

What do you think the chances are she has multiple accounts? haha

Seems like an invasion of privacy to me.... sure its a "public space", but so is the movie theatre when your on a date (but wouldnt want your mom stalking you there either)

I know i grew up on the internet, and my parents didnt watch me... it would have just gotten in the way of my curiosity (and my parents trusted me...).

it was a good thing her dad and i were monitoring her myspace when she was 14 - i will leave it at that

now she's 17 - i do trust her - i only look at it very occasionally

she uses her myspace pretty actively - has friends in the three cities where we've lived, plus other friends that she's met during summer programs that she's attended - lotsa people to keep up with

it's not impossible that she has another account, but given that her dad is an IT professional and he checks her laptop from time to time, it's safe to say that she isn't using her own computer, which means she isn't using any other account with any frequency

you know, i will just point out that people always say that it's the parents' responsibility to monitor their children's internet use -- and then when a parent does that, you say that i'm invading her privacy -- and if something happened to her, if she became one of those girls who disappears because of someone she 'met' online, then people would tut-tut about how the parents should have been more aware of her actions online

i don't read her diary and wouldn't (unless i feared that she might harm herself - which i don't)

the only reason i check her myspace is to check on OTHER people that are talking to her.

i trust her.  i don't (necessarily) trust them.

That's great. My husband is an IT professional as well. It's a concern a lot of people take too lightly. Our daughter is only a toddler, but when the time comes she'll be monitored. :) There are so many dangers that lurk on the net/myspace/and facebook, ect. I think you sound like intelligent parents. Parents that care about their daughter's safety. It doesn't sound like you're going to an extreme at all, imho. There are some parents that won't allow their children to touch a computer. Or to own one... Ect. They aren't allowed to have memebership to any sites, ect. I think people should lighten up because you're doing your job! You're being an accountable parent without just taking everything away. It's refreshing to see people take their roles as parents seriously.

I just wanted to give you kudos on that.

Tons of people are on both......I just haven't gotten around to it yet.....even though I know I should.

I've got both.....I use facebook more than myspace and.... if I can convince my two friends who still only have myspace to get facebook I can actually cancel the account and not have to deal with it anymore! =)~ yay facebook....and getting to see my cute nephews more often than i would any other way!

Facebook yes.

I live in another country than my family/friends.  Its a great way for me to stay in contact.  I find a lot of my friends are on there - so I can post pics and updates and it satisfies everyone.

I had a myspace page for about a year to stay intouch with friends, but I got bored with the whole thing.  Probably because it seems to be such a popularity contest of who has the largest number of "friends", who is the hottest (with pictures of themselves half-dressed, of course) or if your closer to my age (27), then it was all about flaunting your "picture-perfect" wedding, marriage, kids, who has the best job, etc.  I figured that if anyone who one there wants to get intouch with me, then they can call my cell phone & talk to me in real life.

Personally, I'm surprised myspace is still around, but that's just me.

I use to have myspcae but I shut it cos well it was a hassle then while at uni I got facebook cos it helps me connect with my friends more and still does!

I've had facebook for about 4 years now. I've always used it primarily as a way to share pictures with friends. I never got a myspace because all the gaudiness pissed me off. Facebook's started to lose its original charm though. The pages used to be clean and simple and now they're way too busy. AND I keep getting friend requested by my aunts and uncles. Not okay...
