when you say carbonated water do you mean like club soda/sparkling water...because there is a bit of sodium in both, and i rarely see any with sugar substitutes...poland spring flavored waters just have a hint of flavor, not really a sweetness.

fake sugar is good in moderation, and i can't see why carbonated water would be bad for dieters, the amount of sodium is very little

I feel like it tastes like unflavoured pop. Disgusting. Yuck.

I'm not really against sugar substitutes - as long as you can control yourself from going and eating more after having it. Some say it can trigger cravings and cause you to binge. Sounds like if its got artificial sweetners your looking at something that is basically like a diet pop.

Also everything you buy in a package at a store has preservatives in it. So unless you are on a very very strict 'clean eating' lifestyle I wouldn't overly worry about that either.

Go ahead and have some. Drink some regular water too though.
Sometimes I like to drink the flavored carbonated waters but most do contain aspartame (which I am trying to avoid). I drink them mainly to help me feel full when I want to eat but am not really "hungry". However, I realized the bloaty feeling that I get from them just isn't worth it in the end.

Carbonated water is great.  It is basically water with bubbles.  There is 0 sodium and ones that have sodium, so watch the label.  I think they taste the same.  If you want a little flavor, add in a splash of oj and you have a healthy orange soda.  It really works with any fruit juice.  It is much better for you to have the cals from a splash of oj verses all that sugar substitute in diet sodas.

I love it!  I find it helps my craving for a pop!  I have it with dinner...makes me feel like i'm drinking something way more exciting than water!

hasn't hurt my diet.  I drink only 3 things....coffee, carbonated water, and just started drinking the special k protein water during my workouts.  that is it!  The ones I drink are sugar free, sodium free, calorie free & caffeine free.  Does contain aspartame, but that doesn't bother me.  not quite sure what the problem with aspartame is?

carbonation bloats you.
& women have to be especially careful as carbonated beverages can help leech calcium from their bones. Make sure you're getting a lot of calcium.

I find that it bloats me, and although you may not gain "fat".. I normally gain a pound the next day after drinking it, only because it bloats me, and I hate that feeling.

Hi,

I got worried reading this (as I drink loads of sparkling water, it's my favourite drink) and decided to search for more information. So far, I found a rebuttal on Wikipedia's article on soft drinks:

Soft drinks and bone density

There has been a hypothesis that the phosphoric acid contained in some soft drinks (colas) displaces calcium from the bones, lowering bone density of the skeleton and leading to conditions such as osteoporosis and very weak bones. However, calcium metabolism studies by leading calcium and bone expert Dr. Robert Heaney determined that the net effect of carbonated soft drinks, (including colas, which use phosphoric acid as the acidulent) on calcium retention was negligible. He concluded that it is likely that colas prominence in observational studies is due to their prominence in the marketplace, and that the real issue is that people who drink a lot of soft drinks also tend to have an overall diet that is low in calcium. (Source: Heaney RP, Rafferty K. Carbonated beverages and urinary calcium excretion. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 2001,74:;343-347.)

And another study from Science Daily:

(http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2004/03/ 040325071447.htm)

Soft Drinks Not Linked To Decreased Calcium Intake ScienceDaily (Mar. 26, 2004) — Alexandria, Va. -- A new study by researchers at the Center for Food and Nutrition Policy (CFNP) at Virginia Tech published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition found that calcium intake among U.S. adolescents although inadequate, has remained a constant since the 1970s and does not appear to be linked to soft drink consumption.

Based on these, I hope it's an "old wives' tale", but please point me to any studies that show otherwise.

It's a great tool in weening yourself from soda/pop.  I was trying to switch to plain water, and that helped.  I still have them occassionally, when I want something different.

I drink 1 bottle (750ml) of either Perrier or Pellegrino everyday.

For me it's great as it's 0-cal of course, no sugar or sweetners, makes me feel full (although I'll admit the temporary bloating can be annoying) and increases my water intake. Also agreed that it makes me feel I'm drinking much more than just (boring) water.

Only aside is it's somewhat expensive. For the price I spend on that one bottle I can get a full gallon of non-carbonated deer park water.

I really like carbonated water. I feel a million times better drinking it than I do drinking Diet Coke. When I want something other than water, or if I'm out and I feel like having something that's not booze, carbonated water is where it's at

Since carbonated (sparkling) water has been around in the house since I was a baby, I've always taken it for granted, and it was the one thing I drank (and still drink) all my life... When I was an exchange student in the USA I had a hard time finding sparkling water and missed it a lot...

I guess since I'v always been drinking it it doesn't cause any problems; at least I've never felt bloated from it.
