Is SPLENDA-brand sweetener as bad for you as asparatame or sucralose?

i sure hope not, I should be a science experiment for splenda... I use it A LOT!  haha
I love it and use a lot of it, so I hope its not bad stuff.
best case scenario there hasn't been nearly enough research done on it.  realistically even the research that has been done shows that it isn't good for you.

I absolutely LOVE Splenda. I prefer the taste of it even over sugar now. However, many people think it's dangerous, which I completely disagree with. Although I am not a doctor or nutritionist, I have done some research regarding this matter. Below are some of my other forum posts regarding this.

"Although this topic is highly contested, artificial sweeteners, like sucraluse, have not been linked to cancer in HUMANS via many scientific organizations. Yes, this was linked to cancer in rats, but reviewing the studies done by various organizations shows that rats bodies respond differently than humans. Here's a link for some info:

As for actual weight gain, I haven't found any evidence to suggest that you may actually gain weight from using artificial sweeteners"

Post #2:

"So here's a little more info to shed some light on weight gain and artificial sweeteners. The use of artificial sweeteners was correlated to weight gain in rats during a laboratory study. However, these rats expended less energy than those who were fed sugar, which may explain the weight gain. Furthermore, there is not a study covering the same findings for HUMANS. In fact, studies have shown, as the article states, that the use of a sugar substitute along with increased physical activity helped overweight children lose weight.

However, this could all be proven wrong. I just suggest that no one jump to conclusions! Studies that originally restricted artificial sweeteners based on studies performed on rats turned out to later NOT apply to humans. This could be a similar instance. If you are currently using artificial sweeteners without any weight gain, I see no reason to stop.

I love it... I know its "bad" but I can't help it. I'm a cheap college student though so typically when I go out I'll take a ton of packets of it :P

I love how it makes bananas "sweat"... like they get all mushy and super sweet when you put splenda on it. Ahhh that alone should probably tell me not to eat it, but....
I'm not as crazy about Diet Coke with Splenda.  However, I am trying to use it instead of Sweet & Low, even though it leaves a funny filmy taste in my mouth.
Please read page 6 lots of sites about splenda

So, no one has heard anything bad about Splenda?

if you google "is sucralose safe" you can find all kinds of sites about splenda/sucralose toxicity.  Like I said before, the biggest problem is that there have not been enough human studies done with splenda.  If I'm going to put a chemical in my body I want a wealth of research that has already been done about what it will do to me, and that research is just really sparse when it comes to sucralose.
There are so many different views and studies done on artificial sweeteners it is unreal. I think the biggest "bad" thing on sweeteners is that i like triggers your craving for sweet foods. Could be psychological because I can admit I use splenda way too much and have no such cravings...yet. I think splenda is the best brand of artificial sweetener but i think my body would be better off without it. but oh well.
Splenda is sucralose, by the way.

All I can say is I can eat aspartame, but not splenda. I've had some really bad reactions to splenda in the past, though I've never experienced any short term effects from using aspartame.

Now I'm starting to get a bit concerned because more and more brands are switching to Splenda (from aspartame), and I am worried that soon it will be impossible to find sugar-free products that are sweetened with aspartame. I can't eat sugar-free yogurt anymore, because now even Astro sweetens theirs with Splenda :(
Splenda caused cancer in lab rats and may cause health probelms check it out : http://splenda.worldwidewarning.net/
Slenda is made from a chlorinated form of sucrose (that's how they can legally say that it is made from sugar).  The body breaks down splenda into Formaldehyde which has been proven to cause memory loss, headaches, and even brain lesions.  All artificial sweeteners are poisons and should be avoided.  Switch to Stevia which is a plant extract that is 200x sweeter that sucrose.  You can find it in liquid or powder form at any health food store.  ENJOY!
my belief is that substituting chemical sweeteners for natural ones just propagates the collective sweettooth.  we need to be training ourselves to enjoy whole foods, not finding new ways to satisfy our unhealthy cravings.

 right on

I used to think Splenda was the cat's meow, what is this miracle sweetener that has no calories, sign me up.

I realized I used it only in two cups of coffee daily and nowhere else does it appear in my food choices.

I thought I was doing good, but I have come to realize I don't want fake things in my life, not in people, places, things, and especially not in my food.

I have since gone back to raw sugar and the small amount of calories is more than doable in my daily log.

IMO, artificial sweeteners, just like sugar, is bad for one’s health when taken excessively. While some use artificial sweeteners because they are dieting, then they shouldn’t forget that sucralose or aspartame, like everything else, should be taken in moderation. It’s when they are taken excessively that they cause whatever it is they cause. *grins*

Now, to contradict myself, *laughs* I do NOT use sugar, at all! And I do have an excuse. I use artificial sweeteners because my body can’t process glucose. Although, I try not to artificial sweeteners or not, but then, there are just beverages and food that doesn’t go well without it. Aspartame is said to cause cancer, but doesn’t everything? As long as you don’t use it often, then I guess you’d be okay. But, my first choice is splenda.

actually no, everything does not cause cancer. also taking that dismissive attitude will not actually protect you from the health effects of aspartame (which are many, not just cancer.)
