So, I love soup. I love how it can be sooo tasty and so low calorie and so good ofr you. However, whenever I have soup for lunch I feel like I have  a"pit stomach" afterwards. I don't know if anyone knows what I mean but it's really the only way I can describe it. I definitely need something sweet and I become so starving shortly thereafter - not even hungry but rather just the need to eat. This seems to happen no matter how "chunky" the soup is, so it's not like it's happening if I just have brothy soup ... . So goodbye soups, I just cannot take it anymore!

Why not have a wholemeal roll with it or a piece of fruit afterwards?  Soup... even chunky soup... isn't all that substantial so you do need to bulk it out a bit.

i don't ever eat soup on its own because it doesn't keep me full enough. i like filling out my meal with a bigggg salad with veggies.

I don't eat soup by itself either, I usually eat it with bread or with a sandwich also.

As i've stated in other threads, no need to throw out a food completely, just find a way to make it work for you.
Hoping this will make sense but I heard a while back that one of the reasons people joke about being hungry shortly after eating Chinese food is the high volume of vegetables provides an increased water content so it digests quickly and the stomach empties quicker so its no so much 'hunger' as 'emptiness'.  The point was that if you allow some time, your stomach will adjust and it will pass.

When you described a need to fill your stomach that didnt feel like hunger, I thought about the water content of soup and thought there might be a connection.

That's really interesting Sun as it's definitely not hunger just a serious emptiness. I agree, I try to let it pass (if I can avoid the chocolate) and then I am fine. I also do eat saltines always with my soups rather than a roll as it's easier for me to calculate calories. I prefer not to bulk it up with too many carbs or my calories go out the window ... I like the salad idea, I tried that today and didn't have massive emptiness but am still super hungry right now.... hmmmmmmm.

When I have soup for lunch, I make a point of also having something else filling with it, plus some protein ... so I avoid the pit feeling.

All Bran Garlic Herb crackers are nice, too ... 18 crackers, 120 cals, 5g fiber. Add some string cheese or other low fat cheese, and you're set!

Soup by itself is not a meal unless you eat a whole can... even then it's pretty low in fiber and protein, and that's what makes you feel full. Soup is mostly water and it doesn't take long for your body to move it on, leaving you feeling starving again.

Depends on the soup.  I'm a big fan of lentil soup and it fills me up pretty well.  I also like soups with rice, barley, or another kind of grain as the fiber tends to make it more filling.  Black bean soup is another good one.  I like to make my own soups so that I can fill them up with hearty ingredients and not so much water.

I eat soup as a meal all the time. It can be vegetable, fat free clam chowder, or some sort of rice/bean soup. The trick with all three is to drink water with it. I know, right, you think that soup would have enough water in it? But if you drink water with the meal the same as any other "solid' meal, you will feel much more full and for longer. It also helps to get the soup really hot so you have to eat it slow. ^^ Often I will have a cup of tea after my soup in addition to the water.

Ps. I never eat less than 150 calories for a "meal" of soup. Even with all the tricks in the book, you can't eat nothing and make yourself think you're full.

my soup is filling. i get those bouillon cubes (yeah, yeah, high in sodium, but i dont watch out for it) then i chopp up some onions &garlic &throw in some okra &its like one of my fave soups. you can throw in some chickn breast to make it a meal. 100 cals for a big plate (without the chicken). then i have some WASA crackers in them.

Soup with a whole wheat roll, and an apple.  Or if you have the calories to spare soup in a bread bowl!  But don't eat the entire bread bowl!  Maybe 1/4-1/3 of it?

Apple is a good idea.

I get the pit feeling no matter how chunky the soup is. I too love lentil and black bean soups and it happens with those also ... drat those pesky soups!!!

I love soup too!!! Even more than I love to eat soup, I love to make soup. I was pretty apalled to see how much sodium is in the canned stuff, so I never buy it anymore, but making soup is another story. I also find that I get the empty pit soon after though....I have tried to bump up the protein content in the soups to have something in there that takes longer to digest, eg extra chicken, extra tofu, lots of mushrooms, lots of shrimp. I make a mean seafood chowder. And a killer chicken-barley-mushroom soup. Mmmmm soup.

Also I make sure to bring food to work to cover an afternoon snack, otherwise i am so hungry by the time I get home that I clear-cut all food in sight. I learned that lesson the hard way!

If I have soup, I have to some kind of bread and/or fruit with it. A multigrain bread roll and banana + soup is a good combo!
I made http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Corrigans-Minest rone/Detail.aspx  with no beans or carrots, and added zucchini and used veggie broth instead of chicken.

Anyway, I'm still stuffed.  Man that soup is filling.  Try it out!

I buy Amy's Organic soups but one thing I've added to them to make them a bit more filling is TVP (textured vegetable protein). When I take my soup in the morning I just throw it in dry and it cooks in the soup when I heat it in the microwave when I eat it at lunch.

I also eat an apple or orange afterwards for sweetness.

i love soup. i have to disagree with you. warm things like soup, even if they are not that thick, usually give me that full feeling.

but if it doesn't for you, try a whole wheat roll and a salad with your soup. it's a healthy meal and the fiber from the bread and veggies will fill you up and keep you full.

I am a big fan of soup too.

Whenever I go on diets, I always stick with soup. I usually eat French bread or brown bread with my soup. The result of this is a fuller and happier stomach. Soup tastes great with bread. You can also try adding vegetables (peas, peppers, etc) to the soup. Never give up on food which tastes great!

I eat soup almost everyday for lunch. It's usually one of two soups. A hot pot of it is 100cals-140cals and rice is served with it. It keeps me full for 5 hours usually. However, today I did experience that empty feeling soon afterward but it's rare with the two soups I eat.

alibsam, what are the two soups you most commonly eat?
