The Evil side of SOUP
So, I love soup. I love how it can be sooo tasty and so low calorie and so good ofr you. However, whenever I have soup for lunch I feel like I have a"pit stomach" afterwards. I don't know if anyone knows what I mean but it's really the only way I can describe it. I definitely need something sweet and I become so starving shortly thereafter - not even hungry but rather just the need to eat. This seems to happen no matter how "chunky" the soup is, so it's not like it's happening if I just have brothy soup ... . So goodbye soups, I just cannot take it anymore!
It could also be a blood sugar problem---be sure you have sufficient protein to balance the carbs. If it has too much of any of the carbs, including but not limited to high fructose corn syrup, in relation to the protein you consume, your blood sugar may spike (especially if you are diabetic or pre-diabetic) and give you that pit stomach you mention. Some cheese or chicken breast or tuna to go with the soup works for me. Cheese can be low fat, cottage cheese could work---just think healthy protein and watch what kind of starch or sweetner is added to the soup.
I guess I don't understand the problem. I have been having homemade soups for lunch every work day for over a year and have felt fully satisfied. I usually have a piece of fruit, a sugar free popcicle or even a home made sorbet for desert. I usually make a big pot of soup every other week, freezing them so I have a variety.
I eat soup a lot too---I just have to watch the balance with protein---but everyone is different. The blood sugar issue and what triggers it varies a great deal from one person to the next. If it isn't broke, don't fix it---but if it doesn't work quite right a bit of tweaking may fix it right up. :-)
Hi, I also like to have soup. But I agree with kateomoore that it needs either to contain some protein, or you need to have some protein with it, especially if you are having commercial soup with very little protein in it. Add two to three oz. of chicken or tuna, or have some cheese with your crackers along side. Also soups with a lot of rice or noodles will cause a dramatic spike in blood sugar levels, and a quick drop. resulting in hunger and no energy. Something to do with the glycemic index. (This also applies to Chinese food. It is the rice or noodles that causes a quick spike in blood sugar levels. Try having Chinese without the rice, and the lots of veggies/bit of meat combination will leave you feeling much fuller much longer)
