and exception to losing weight?

Quote  |  Reply
ok, so i havent been on in a while. theres a lot of resons for that, mostly the idea of having to "diet" again seemed every unwelcoming. but, oh well. id just like to clear something up. ignore all of my previous posts. im a different person now, and those were all written at a very difficult time and im trying to get over it. so id like to start new. i almost even made a new account. anywayss. here my problem:

all of my friends are thin, and they eat whatever they want, whenever they want it. and nothing happens. they dont exercise it off, and they dont watch what they eat. im the exception. maybe my metabolism? also, i made it my obsession to know every single detail i can about weight loss and health, etc. so i know how the book tells you to lose weight. but i really dont think that works for me. maybe all the starvation+i had a slow metabolism in the frist place? idk. but if i eat or ate as much as the diets reccomend, or as much as my friends...i blow up like a balloon. its so frustraiting because im told that i want lose an ounce if i dont eat enough calories, but if i eat enough i gain weight. so what do i do?? im convinced that the only way for me to lose the weight would be to starve completley, even though now im in between cause i eat..but not as much as i "should" am i the exception to the classic diet?

p.s. dont worry, im not thinking about starving or deproving myself
:]

okay, first of all your friends dont eat alot &never gain weight, you just happen to see them when they're eating.

second, you only gain all that weight at first because of your disordered eating. at first you will gain a little bit of weight, but once your body gets used to it, your metabolism will kick up.

exercise + eat ENOUGH food, &youll see reults.

i reeeeeally dont want to gain any more weight then i already have.
id rather stay the same then gain  anything.
:/

hahah! but they do! they eat junk food, and alot of it!

peacelovehominy makes a really good point.  You are not around your friends 24 - 7 so you can't really judge from the little time you see them as to whether they are taking in too many calories.

you HAVE to eat more, simply put. just try it out, it really works.

they may eat junk food but your not around them all the time. i used to think my friends ate alot &never gained, but if i asked them what they ate the rest of the day, it would hardly be anything. you just caught them when they were really hungry.

still, they eat more then id ever dare to. what i meant was that they dont watch what they eat and they still stay thin

you dont have to watch what you eat to not gain. i maintain my weight for quite a bit with ALOT of junk. you just have to watch how much you eat. trust me. i know, they're not super people. they're normal like you &me.

anyways just eat more. youll thank yourself later.

i feel disgusting when i eat =/

and i really dont think im normal. i think if i jsut ate i would gain weight. because thats what seems to happen.

red flag!

have you had anorexia or bulimia in the past?

anorexia.
go get help in the H&S forum =)
Better yet, go see a doctor - one that is familiar with eating disorders/poor body image, or at least that will refer you to a specialist.   Have blood work done, just to rule out something physical.  (If you have an eating disorder, you have done some not so nice things to your metabolism.  Have your thyroid checked)
ive had all the tests.
cause i lost my period
and my doctors dont really know about me starving myself [i know, i know..its not good] and neither do my parents. not many people do, actually. but i eat now..i still dont get my period though, but i do know that theres no healthy complications considering they ran numerous blood and thyroid and who knows what tests on me.

how many calories do you eat

whats your height/weight?

i eat
a bowl of cereal in the morning
a bad of apple slices= 35 cal
a sandwhich wrap= approx 140 cal
sometimes a snack= not sure it differs
and then dinner= about 300? 200?

im 5'3.5"
and im too afraid to weigh myself
=[ hah.

What may have happened to you is, with eating too little, your metabolism has slowed, and you now must eat less to maintain a higher weight.  As the CC+ Library puts it:

"...very low calorie diets can cause excessive muscle breakdown and metabolic adaptations, which can drive down your calorie requirements. In the end, you'll need fewer calories to maintain a higher weight."

This is reversable, but you're going to have to gain weight for a little while.  It takes about 3 months (in my own experience and that of other CC members).  What you need to do is eat your maintenance level calories as determined by the CC Tools.  Figure out your burn.  If you are a teenager, add 300 calories to that.  This number is what your maintenance level should be.  Have this every day for 3 months, no matter what happens.

You will gain weight.  After a while, the weight gain will level off.  When that happens, keep at the maintenance level for another month.  Then begin slowly cutting calories, by 100 a day each week, until your weight starts to drop.  You'll find that your new weight loss calorie intake is a lot higher than it is now.

I know the prospect of gaining is scary for you (I remember how you struggled before), but this is really worth doing.  And it can be fun because you'll be able to join your friends.  If I remember correctly, you are not anywhere near over weight, so gaining won't be unhealthy for you.

good luck!

yea, listen to clairelaine

Clairelaine makes some great points. You have to accept the fact that you might gain a few pounds in the very short term to lose weight after that.

The main thing is you need to get your metabolism kick-started (by eating) if you want to have a life full of health!

guess what? your friends are gonna get fat eventually if they keep it up. they might have fast metabolisms right now, but if they keep eating like you say they are, it will not take long to slow down. keep the focus off of how your friends live because that is not gonna work for you. seriously, the only way to lose weight (like so many others have said) is to eat enough and exercise. also, you say you've only gained by trying the calorie counting thing, but you really need to give it a chance. i dont know how long you've done it in the past, but it really takes time to work, and trust me, it will work.
What were you eating when you felt like you were gaining and trying to eat healthfully?
