Do I HAVE to excercise?!

Quote  |  Reply
I just can't get motivated to do it, and have been eating around 1200 calories/day, anyways, and I know if I do exercise, I need to eat more. I was walking 20min/day @ 3.0 MPH, but it just hurts my feet. I have good tennis shoes, but ah, no fun, even with my iPod. I think maybe once I get some of my weight off, I will be more interested in it... what do you think? Should I just get back on it, to do it? And eat more? I feel like I eat enough, already. I have a hairy schedule as is. I work nights, so I get up about 3:30p-4p and have a protein shake (200cal) and then fix supper around 7p, leave for work at 10p, get there at 11p, have another shake at 4:30a. I usually try to have a snack between supper and my 2nd shake, but don't always. Maybe I should work 1-2 snacks in, around 10p & 1a? I get off work at 7a, and home around 8a. I usually tried to walk then, and go to bed afterwards. Any advice? Thanks!

i lost 30 pounds with an average of 3 hours excercize a week. you dont really need it for weight loss. but you do for a healthier lifestyle

Yes, you "HAVE" to exercise ... not necessarily for weight loss, but for general overall health ... especially cardiovascular health.

My goal right now for exercise is very modest ... 90 minutes per week (the equivalent of 30 minutes per day x 3 days a week) which I spread out based on how I am feeling (I have a lot of health issues I'm dealing with.) Once I've been doing 90 minutes a week for the month of January, I'm increasing that to 120 minutes per week for February.

Wanna be exercise buddies? I'm just walking on the treadmill ... and biking once in a while.

=^..^= MOLLY

Yes.  The more you exercise, the healthier you get.  I exercise so I can eat an extra couple hundred calories and be healthy, no paticular order.

If you get bored like I do.  I have the attention span of a puppy.  I do circuit exercises.  I hop on my elliptical warm-up get off do weights for a minute back on the elliptical for 2 minutes back off with another weight set.  I don't set time, like Oh I'm going to do 30 mins, I just let it flow.  Somedays its 20 but most days its 30-40.  You have to find something you like, trust you'll want to do it every day.

Find a routine that works for you and doesn't keep you bored or completely sore the first time.

I keep exercising in bursts. I will go three or four days in one week and then not go for two or three. I don't have a huge weight problem, so I keep telling myself I don't really have to exercise. But I know I do! And I even enjoy the treadmill once I'm at the gym... does anyone have any advice on motivation to actually getting there?

Thanks!

I dieted first..Lost the majority of my weight on it. I was right around where you are at. Now I have to exercise if i want to lose. Which is what your weight goal weight is.

So do you have to exercise?
It would be good for you..but you will still lose weight as long as you just adjust your calorie intake to a non-exercise level.

Do what works for you. Also exercise doesnt have to be hours long. a 10-15 minute walk 2 x a day is a good starting place that wont kill your feet too badly. Also you could get some of those little free weights to put by the TV to do a few reps while watching shows. Just leave them out and do them when you feel like it. Something is better than nothing.

Thanks for the tips, everyone.

I just know I need to get in the routine and I will be set. I have the food thing down pat, and find it rather easy. It's almost harder to make sure I'm eating enough rather than too much. My plan is to exercise, some type of it, M-W-F, for however long, at least 20 min on the treadmill, if I have to get to sleep ASAP, on those days. This morning I played Rock Band (video game for XBOX 360/PS3). I do play it standing up and kinda get into the music, so that should help, right? LOL. I also have Dance Dance Revolution, so I'm going to get that out, too.

I ate Subway tonight, and was going to be at only 977 calories by the end of the day, so I brought a Babybel (70 cal) and some Teddy Grahams (150 cal) to work, so I will make 1200.

Yes, I think we really do HAVE to exercise.  I had a boyfriend once who joked that I have the attention span of a goldfish (??!!)-Tongue out-so I understand the boredom factor.  I've found, though, that for me it's only after about 15 or 20 min. that a walk/jog becomes enjoyable.  I dunno' if it's the endorphins or my mind just becomes "ok" with the rhythm of it after a little while.  Maybe you could try exercising a little longer, with less frequency?
hethr- I agree, the first 15 mins of any workout is the hardest.  and that being said, I should head to the gym.  Frown

Yes, you do.  Even if it's just a brisk walk, your body needs to move.

If you have trouble with paying attention for long, try a 10-minute workout DVD. I've been doing the 10-minute Solutions Pilates, and I find myself wanting to do more once I get through the first one-- plus, since they're so short, they keep you moving so you won't get bored.
Cool! I can do a 10 minute workout for sure. Who makes these DVDs le_tigre?

Wow this is a really old post but I just saw that question. I just use the series that's on YouTube so far...

Abs

Buns & Thighs

Sculpting

Burn

Flexibility

I've been doing Winsor Pilates. Most of the DVD's are 20 min. I can only half way do some of the stuff, as my legs just aren't very flexible and strong. But I try my best and feel really good afterwards. I rotate 5 DVD's (Basic, Upper Body, Ab Sculpting, Buns & Thighs and Back), and that helps with the "boringness".

How many times should I do this per week to see the best weight loss results w/o over doing it and making where it's just a pain in the behind? Is 3 times a week okay, or should I always shoot for 5?

Thank you so much for the youTube links Le tigre!! I had already checked out exercise videos there, but didn't find these ones. They are exactly what I am looking for. I am currently using  similar videos from Crunch (the ones with ellen Barrett). They are great, but I need to change for a while.

How long did it take for you to lose your 30 pounds and what was your routine like?

My mom swears by Curves.  She never had any kind of exercise regimen when I was growing up, but she's been doing a 30min circuit there almost every day for going on two years now.  I think it would be pretty good if you have a problem with boredom, and I believe some locations are 24 hours.

You can loose weight without exercise but you need to be physically active to be healthy. If you cannot walk for 20 minutes without pain that is a problem that needs to be addressed. Start with something small. Try 15 minutes a day of walking and add some light weighs. Maybe another 15 minutes and slowly work your way up. Try to be more physically active in general. Walk the dog, household chores, park in the spot furthest away from the door when shopping and so on. No one can motivate you that is something you have to decide to do for yourself but  your body will reward you for treating it right and punish you for mistreating it. If you remain so inactive you will experience health problems related to that.

Just be careful. You say you find the diet portion quite simple. If that's the case, why are you eating a block of cheese and some Teddy Grahams? If you truly understood what you need to do to lose weight on this diet, you'd know that Teddy Grahams are nothing but refined sugars and simple carbs. Cheese is extremely calorie dense, though it does have nutrients in it. I try to avoid both of those things unless I have such a bad craving that I can't not eat them. Haha.

That's not to say you should get rid of these items, you're certainly in the position to eat them every once in a while, but you grabbed two unhealthy things after mentioning that you just bought a Subway sandwich... which is made with more cheese (presumably) and a huge roll of simple carbs.

You can't eat 1200 calories of crap and still get desirable results. That's just not how it works. If you made this post due to the fact that you're not getting the results you've been trying for, there's your answer.

My daughters and I get into Rock Band and especially on the drums I break a sweat!  If you like swimming its good too - I particularly enjoy aquafit.  You're getting a good workout even though it doesn't always feel like it.  I also did belly dancing for awhile and it was fun and a great workout on your core, abs and hips!
