Excercise plan

Hi dear fellow members I hope you are all well,

I would appreciate some advice on effective outdoor exercise, I have taken up jogging I do a max of 3o mins 3 times a week and I walk for a minimum of one hour all the other days of the week-however I feel like I need to incorporate more calorie burning cardio, can you advise on effective calorie burning cardio workouts for someone who hates going to the gym, and works out on their own?

Is running for 3o mins 3 times a week effective in losing weight?

I would really appreciate some advice and help, many thanks and all the best

As long as you're burning more calories than you take in you'll lose weight but you need to run a minimum of 40-45 minutes before your body starts burning fat.

I don't know what your fitness level is but there are some really fun dvds out there.  Most are between $10-$15 so they don't break the budget.  You could try Bollywood dance (I have this dvd and it's alot of fun but there's a lot of jumping so if you have downstairs neighbors I would steer clear), belly dancing, or martial arts.  I like dvds because they offer a wide variety of excercise without the pain of going to a gym (I hate the gym too).  I don't know if Pilates is considered cardio but it's great for losing weight and toning.  There is a pilates series that's really good, I forget the name, but it offers 5 ten minute workouts, each targeting a different part of the body or with a different goal, like stretching or fat burning.  It's really good because you can mix and match.

I hope this helps,

Karen

I've tried jogging, and even with all the stretching and the warmups, I still hurt my calf muscles, can't walk for two days after. So two weeks ago I decide to try something. Right in front of my house there's a little rock formation thing, like a miniature mountain, and I go up and down twice, both sides. I get a great cardio without having to run or anything.

Personnally I beleive it depends on your own body. For me 20 minutes does the job. I am burning fat and making muscle. I wouldn't want to get up a 5 am to squeeze in 45 minutes or more of cardio... I'm not into torture that much ;).

Thanks for the helpful hints-and speedy reply, actually I had just ordered a Susan Deason DVD which is a pilates and balance ball combo for losing weight I will give it ago and see what happens combined with the jogging I hope it works-I plan too lose 36lb by the end of August- I know its aggressive but Im trying to do everything right-do you think its possible to lose 36 lb's in 3 months?

Thanks for your help again yo uhave been great

A healthy weight loss rate is approx 2lb per week.  With alot of work and a doctor's supervision, you could lose 5lb per week but it's important to make sure that you do it the right way (the healthy way, ie, not starving yourself) which would include strenuous excercise and disciplined eating habits.  If you're committed to losing that kind of weight in such a short time, I suggest you do a lot of research first.  It won't be easy but it is possible.  36lb in 6-12 months, or 15lb by August would be more reasonable goals.

Best of luck,

Karen

thanks for that well I guess I will have to be realistic-im not into starving myself, so I doubt that will happen:-) even 15lb's is good for me too.

thanks for the help and good luck with your goals too.

I too am currently working out outside. I have membership to YMCA and Bally's, niether of the two I go to currently. I am jogging also, but I add in my own extra workout to tone up my body too. The park I go to has a little workout area. I make a stop at this area after each lap I jog. 1st lap I will do push-ups and dips. 2nd lap I do two back excersices. 3 lap I will do two ab workouts. Then repeat! My total workout time is 30-35 min, 2.90 miles. I know it sounds like a lot, but I started off slowly. I was able to only complete one set (basically all three one time). I started off able to only do 3 pull ups, now I can do 10. Stay commited and listen to your body. Yesterday I only did three laps cause I felt my body was tired and it was because I didn't sleep well the night before. Listen to your body, learn what your body is telling you. It takes time.

The Internet if full of useful information on how to workout with out going to the gym or taking classes. I love getting out there and running and doing my thing. I am getting leaner and more tone plus my current clothes are getting bigger!!

Hi nirvanaparpar! If you haven't been exercising regularly, 30 minutes a day 3 times a week is just fine. What you want to do is eventually get it to where you incorporate some strength training into your routine along with some stretching. One thing you could do is to add yoga for 30 minutes a day alternating on the days when don't run and take your mat outside on a straight surface at the park or something. Hatha yoga is great for stretching! On top of that, you might want to lift light barbells 15 minutes twice a week since strength training raises your metabolic rate drastically by creating more muscle to burn calories. Good luck, and hope this helps!

Hi, nirvanaparpar, Glad to hear your'e putting so much effort.  To be honest with you, I personally am not the jogging or walking type of person, I  seem to tire out faster and my excersice ends quicker.  I don't like feeling like that.  So as far as outdoors goes,.. road cycling has been awesome for me.  When I was younger in my teenage years, I could cycle for miles and not get too tired, so although I wasn't hurting , my endurance was awesome, and as long as I kept going, by body was having a great effect.  I was in awesome shape.  And now, after trying the eliptical machines, the treadmills, and so forth indoors, I don't seem to last as long as I do now with cycling.  I can go for close to 2 Hrs. 3x's a week.  And each time I go I feel like I can go longer, the endurance is easier to attain.  And inches have come off fast.  My husband inspired me to return to this excercise, he lost soooooooo much weigt cycling in the last 4 months.  So I took it up again, and it's awesome!  Differnt sceneries , different streets, hills, you pick your own route each time.  Then you find out which routes feel your legs burn more.  when they burn a bit you know it's working, then you can relax a bit and go some more.  Now,  the first day was a KILLER!! Just went around the corner and I thought I was gonna die!  My husband had bought me a nice bike, (he had second thoughts on the investment after seeing me moan).  It was aweful, then a few days later... I was better.  Adjusting to the seat(painful) at first. Then by the 2nd week, we were going everywhere  I rode for about 2 1/2 hours, and I felt wonderful!  My thighs finally getting firm and AMAZING how many parts of your body are worked out.  Do research on it.  I love it now.  I crave my rides. And you feel so refreshed when you're done. Early in the morning and afternoons are the best times.  Try it out. It's a blast. I p.s ...I respect the guys you see in the tour de france, now that is not as easy as it looks.

I go to the gym 3 days a week, but I hate it. What I really love is tennis! Find someone to hit with and you'll burn over 500 calories an hour. The best part is that an hour flies by.
