I walk about 4.25 mph (power walk with 2lbs weights, one in each hand) with my mp3 player 5 days a week (on my lunch hour) and have had much success with loosing the weight and maintaining that weight by cutting down to 2 days a week. It takes me right around an hour to walk a 4.26 mile course - some days it takes me 63 mins, some days it's 59.5 mins. I would say that walking suits me just fine as opposed to "running" which is really jogging to me, but walking I don't have to worry about my feet killing me later =)
I went from 217lbs down to 155lbs in just about 5 months with the help of a proper diet. I'm currently at 175 looking to get back to 160 before the middle of Aug. I'm also an ex smoker, so the weight is coming off much slower this time around =)
when I first started, I did a 10 minute walk/run treadmill workout for about a week/week and a half, then I upped it to 15 minutes for a few weeks, then I upped it again to 20 minutes for a few weeks, and then to 30 for a few weeks, and now I'm at about 45 minutes.
Initially I was doing a run/walk combo (with most of the time spent walking) at about 5 mph. (although, I'm sure my average speed was much lower than that since most of my tiime was spent walking, not running.)
Now I do a straight run (with only about two minutes break time total) at an average of about 5.5 mph
I actually did a full hour treadmill for a week last week, but I scaled it back to 45 minutes. An hour is just too time consuming considering I also lift weights now. I've been lifting weights for about a month and half or so too (although the effort is light.)
