Hey. I am a 19 year old 5ft 1 109 pound woman who suffers from excess flatulence. I don't know what is the cause of this. I eat very healthy. I'm a whole food vegan. I don't eat any dairy, sweets, wheat (due to celiacs) or any fast food of any sort. My diet is composed of only fruits, veggies, nuts and legumes.  Any suggestions?

Hello, Excess Flatulence,

I have Excess Belching and Bloating!

I am in a similar quandry!  What have you tried to help yourself?  Have you tried Beano?

I have no idea what is wrong with me, either.  I've tried Prilosec, Pepcid, Gas X, Probiotics, Charcoal, and even had my gall bladder out - which I thought for sure would fix it.  I wonder if its lactose intolerence, wheat intolerence?  I am tired of trying to figure it out!

I am 52 with a BMI just under 25, and have lost 10 pounds and about 9 inches around my bust/waist/hips in the last 3 months.  I thought that would help, but alas, no.

How much fiber are you getting a day - that should be in your "analysis" of your food diary.  I usually have between 18-25 grams a day.  I dont know if the fiber could be "it" for us?

You could try pro-biotics (capsule form from drug stores) or Beano.  That is what I would try first, I think.  Have you been diagnosed with celiac?  Isnt gas apart of that syndrome?  Have you asked your doctor?

Anyone with advice on belching and bloating would also be appreciated.

I've had problems with this too ... I've learned however that the body can only digest about 300 calories of carbs at a time, any more than that and I get gassy ... try eating more smaller meals through the day. Also, lettus/spinach can make me really gassy too, I don't eat salad more than 2 days in a row.

Where ever you be,

Let your wind go free,

For holding it in was the death of me!

Definately talk to your doctor. Try taking beano and lactobacillipylarus (i think its called) which are good - gut - bacteria pills!

Also, try to stay away from more fiberous fruits/ veggies and stick with more starchy ones, it should also help.

Eating large amounts of vegetables and fruit will do it.

Two quick tips;

  • Cook your food to soften it up
  • Chew your food well

This sort of diet will cause that... you might need to introduse some other foods or look at which legumes and vegitables you eat and swap things about a bit.

Do you use artificial sweeteners? Do you drink plenty of water before, during and after your meals? Why don't you eat meat? Meat is not bad and if you are not getting protein from other sources that could be a problem. Do you chew a lot of gum?

I haven't talked to my doctor because all she recommends is medication and I haven't taken medication in 2 years and can do without! I also would not resort to eating meat because I really don't like it personally.  I think I found the root of my problem..I'm ingesting too many carbs as someone previously posted. I do drink a lot of water and my diet is mostly composed of carbs since I'm a runner and I''ve read that runners needs more carbs than protein. I've been limiting my intake a bit and eating smaller meals and I feel as though my flatulence is down to a tolerable level. Ha! Thanks again for all the input.
