What can I do about excess skin?
Asked by anonymous on Sep 02, 2008 in Weight Maintenance

A few years ago, I weighed 224.4 lb, and after a year of dieting with very little physical activity, I lost 70.4 lb. Now, after some more dieting, I weigh 136.4 lb, and I am perfectly satisfied with my weight. The problem is the excess skin, mainly on my stomach. It's really ugly and I would like to lose it. Does exercising help? Or should I go on a diet to lose just that flap?

Answer

More dieting will not help you to lose excess skin.  Strength-training exercises that build up the core muscles, like Pilates, might help you to fill out a bit.  But it takes time for the skin to snap back, and your skin’s elasticity depends on your genetics, age and how long you were overweight.  Eating high-vitamin A foods, like dark green and bright orange vegetables and fruit, is good for the skin’s elasticity.  But for some people, plastic surgery is the best solution.
