How much exercise is best?

Quote  |  Reply

Is it better to walk on the treadmill 1/2 hour every day or 3/4 hour 4 days a week?

Which will yield the best weight loss?

this is all going to depend on how much you eat, how much you weigh, and how much you exert yourself on the treadmill.

walking for a half hour, at an easy pace is not going to do very much.. but if you up the speed and raise the incline, you will start really working and burn more calories.. challenge yourself everytime, if it gets too easy, make it harder! go faster, go longer!

and the best method is something that you can keep up with for a lengthy period of time... if everyday is too much, then go for a couple days a week.. but make sure to switch it up to keep your body guessing, and you from getting bored.

also make sure you have a kick-butt playlist.. music keeps you motivated and makes the session go by super fast... and hey it pumps you up, sets the mood, and makes it more enjoyable

In general, intervals are going to be better than steady state cardio, so instead of either of your options, try of HIIT 3 days a week (give yourself a break between HIITs) - the schedule that's linked at the bottom of the page has you start with only 4 minutes - doesn't sound like much, but if you are doing it all-out, you'll be exhaused. With a warm up and a cool down, it's still close to 20 mintues.

How it affects weight loss is going to depend on your stats and how much you eat (enough, not too much).

Well, half an hour per day would put you on the treadmill for 210 minutes/week while 45 minutes 4 days a week would total 180 minutes/week.  So assuming your rate of exertion is the same reguardless of how long your on there, more time = more calories = more weight loss.
