Is this too much exercise?

Quote  |  Reply

I am very overweight and trying to lose it. I am working towards the lapband surgery and I must lose 25 pounds or my insurance will not cover the surgery.  I have taken my calories down to 1500 a day and have been going to the gym. I am riding the stationary bike for 20 minutes (6 miles), doing the circuit (like curves) for 15 minutes and walking the treadmill at 2.3 mph for 15 minutes. I am doing this 2 times a day, 7 days a week. I do not want to bulk up but just lose weight and firm up. I have had several people tell me that I am going to the gym too much and that I am hurting myself instead of helping myself. I am new to exercising and really have no clue what I am doing. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

i'd up your cal intake to over 1800. that's a lot of energy being taken out of you, especially if you're overweight you're gonna need the energy.

good for you though !

I second the thought of just make sure you are eating enough, You are exercising 1 hour and 40 minutes all together--sounds 'ok' to me..But how do you feel? Are you exhausted, tired, feel fatigued?

And another question; if you have this much energy to lose weight..why not just lose weight the natural weight instead of having a high risk surgery?

Common recommendations are that to loose weight you have to exercise about 1 hour a day most days of the week. However, that advice also states that you start slow and work your way up to this. It looks like you are doing about 50 minutes 2 times a day 7 days a week. That may lead to an injury as you state you are just starting out. However, the very best person to ask is your doctor. I am not sure anyone who hasn't assessed your fittness would be qualified to say whether or not this is too much. Right now it seems you are able to endure this and you didn't mention any injuries so it could be fine for you. My gut says that you are doing too much because you aren't taking a rest day. The other part of me says ...WAHOOOO you are able to do 1 hour 40 mintues of exercise a day you go but seriously it could lead to an injury that could put you out of commission for 6 weeks ....yep I did the same thing when I first started out [like you I wanted to loose as quick as possible and figured more exercise=more weight loss] and ended up with a foot injury that was so painful that I couldn't hardly walk for 6 weeks. After 20 months of working out (minus the 6 weeks), I can do the longer workouts on most days of the week. So just be careful and consult your doctor to find out what is recommended for you.

I did slowly work up to where i am now, and i feel great. I think breaking it up into 2 times a day helps. I just want to make sure im not hurting myself and that i wont end up looking like the hulk. lol.

Lol, i couldnt help but laugh at the "i wont end up looking like the hulk" made me laugh. I dont think its going to make you look like the hulk, just make you look slimmer and make you feel better. I think if you feel good, and you arent tired that its good that your splitting it up in 2 sessions. 1500 calories is okay, depends what you burn at the gym and what your BMR is. You dont want to drop it to much because THAT will do you no good (i just had to recently up my calories because i wasnt feeling okay)

Anyways, its good that you have that kind of motivation, and I'm going to agree with booster1, if you DO have that much energy, its always better to lose it the natural way, plus it will make you feel so much better once you reach the weight you want to be

good luck :)

Seriously consider taking a rest day.  It wont hurt your weight loss goals and will help ensure that your body can recover from your exercise.  You dont even have to be sedintary all day.  Just skip the gym one day a week.  Take a moderate walk instead, go bowling or shopping with a friend.

I second/third having a rest day.

It's not good for your body to go from doing no exercise to exercising seven days a week... your body needs at least one day off to recover. I was doing a moderate exercise routine (an hour of walking 5 days a week) and having great success with my weightloss and I decided to push myself further and up the intensity and really push myself every day. I was really proud of myself for a few months... but all I really managed to do was to trash both my knees in three months time so now I have difficulty exercising at all. Slow and steady really DOES win the race - at least it ensures that you'll get to the end under your own power.

BTW, if you can manage to lose 25 pounds through a healthy diet and exercise, you really don't NEED a lapband to continue your success... healthy habits are forever.

I just thought I would add - my sister and her fiance both compete in ultrathons. Never heard of an ultrathon? It's like an insane triathlon. You swim 10km, then bike 200km, then run a marathon (42km). I think a mile is 2.2km.

They both train for 5 days a week and are very aware of the dangers of overtraining - burn out, muscle weakness and injuries, in particular.
