Exercise for the handicapped.

Quote  |  Reply

Hello, I am new here, so I hope I am posting this correctly.  I have to use a walker to get around and then I can only go for very short distances (less than 100 feet).  I need both hips replaced, but I need to lose weight in order to have the surgery.  What can I do to increase my metabolism?  I spend most of every day in a motorized lift chair, so I need to be able to do some type of exercise in the chair.

Thank you for any advice anyone can give.

There is a whole show dedicated to fitness for people with limited mobility.

Good luck to you!

Thank you!  I think I will order one of the dvds, because the show is not broadcast in my state.

If you are able to get to a YMCA or other swim club with a therapy pool, water walking is really a good exercise.  That involves wearing a floatation vest and simply walking in the water.  I'm going to try it this spring.

Yes! Water walking is a great idea! There is no stress on the joints and muscles! You use a belt around your waist to hold you up! I love it!

Paige has this seated workout posted, and you can probably steal some ideas for moves from her Beginner's resistance band workout if you've got a standard pair or a Theraband.
