Exercise induced asthma

Quote  |  Reply

Does anybody have this?  I just found out that's what I have & unfortunately I do not have insurance to get an inhaler.

Any suggestions on how to control it w/out killing myself in the gym ?

I have exercise induced asthma...it's a pain in the butt!!!  That said, it's definitely something that you can control.

My advice to you is to start slow and easy. Learn how to listen to your body - when you are breathing hard because you are tired and pushing yourself vs. when you are starting to cross that line and having an attack.

A good warm up is really key too, as is a good cool down. Try and avoid sudden starts and stops.....for me, interval training was something to avoid - at least until I was much more fit.

When I started, a typical training program was a 5 minute walk to warm up and then 20 minutes of light jogging. I would start at an "easy" pace on the treadmill, and then up the speed one level every 5 minutes. Once I reached the 20 minute point, I would lower the speed one level every 1 minute until I was back at a walking pace.

Do things like the elliptical trainer - which are a little less stressful. You will definitely have days where you are tired and no matter how easy you take thing, you'll be coughing like crazy after the workout.....a hot, steamy shower tends to help me get that under control. In the end, it gets better - and the stronger you get, the better you can control the asthma.

Good luck!!

Hi, I have severe asthma that is being managed on 250/50 Advair and Singulair. It's much worse if I excert myself, and that can be extremely frustrating. I don't have insurance either, but have been able to sign up for a "patient assistance" program through my student health center. Perhaps you would qualify for free medication? Check with your doctor! :)

As a geology student I have to hike 10 - 16 mi/day in the field starting January, for 14 days straight. We're headed to the desert to map a mountain range. Anyway, I have been slowly building my resistance up to the point where I can run 2 - 3 miles without slowing down (doesn't sound like much, but is a HUGE improvement from just a couple of months ago).

Allergies can make asthma much worse too. You might want to consult with your doctor or a dietician to make sure there's nothing in your daily diet that you're allergic to. I found out that I'm allergic to wheat, and for at least three years have been getting a rash and mouth sores after I'd eat a sandwich, etc. I stopped eating all wheat containing products (sucks!!!) and my asthma and allergies have improved.

Good luck with your asthma and treatment!Smile

I have allergic asthma that does get aggravated with HIIT to the point I really can't do it. Even when I was on Adivair, Singulair, and an inhaler.

As far as insurance and inhalers, you can get Primatine mist but you have to be very careful with it. A $15 bottle of it lasts me over a month when I have to get one. That's only because a prescription runs out and the doctor won't renew until I get an appointment.

You don't need insurance to buy a basic albuterol inhaler... it's much cheaper than singulair or advair or the other fancy newfangled asthma medications, and for simple exercise-induced asthma it should work just as well. Please go to the pharmacy and buy one. It should be less than fifty dollars, and it might save your life. Asthma isn't something to mess with.

The other alternative is to give up heavy-duty exercising and just walk (but make sure that you do it away from traffic, smoke and other lung irritants that might set you off.) Pick up the pace slowly, and watch out in cold weather, because cold air can make it worse too...

I am a respiratory therapy student and also have "undiagnosed" exercise induced asthma...(I felt symptoms so my dr. ordered me an albuterol inhaler just to see if it'd help) ... I'd check how much one is without insurance-

I usually take 2 puffs about 15 mins before I start exercising...seems to work for me......

Good Luck!
