Exercise / Lifestyle Calorie Intake Calculation

Quote  |  Reply

I've just started to count and am having a problem determining how many calories should be my target.  I'm a 58 year old male weighing 210.  My target weight is 175 by the end of October.

When I pick "sedentary" it says 1500 daily but I exercise on a treadmill daily and it's calorie counter says I'm burning about 675 calories.  In most other respects "sedentary" is the right discription.

I'd appreciate any thoughts on this.

i would suggest using that 1500 calories as a baseline, and then adding in your exercise.  So to lose a pound a week (500 calorie deficit per day), if you burned 675 calories on the treadmill+1500 calories BMR (total 2175) then you should eat approximately 1675 calories/day and you will lose 1 pound per week...

thats how I do it and it works for me

If you do regular daily exercise you're not sedentary.  So set your activity level appropriately.  If you're on the treadmill for half an hour a day that would be 'light'.... more than half an hour a day and it rises to 'moderate'....  (The calorie burn on gym equipment is notoriously inaccurate.)

Exercise not only affects the amount of energy you need at the time but also when your body is at rest.  So 'sedentary' + 'activity' doesn't necessarily = 'total burn'.

Good luck

Thanks to all that helped.  I did figure out I was using the "calorie counter" incorrectly.  The more accurate number is 375 which make more sense.

I used the Burn Meter & Calorie Target Tools and upped my activity from "Sedentary" to "Moderate Activity" which produced a calorie target of 1810 to hit my goal. I'll work with that and see how it goes!

Thanks again.
