Exercise in place of walking

Quote  |  Reply
I used to rely upon walking (3 miles per day) for the majority of my exercise.  However, for the last 3 months I have had a lot of foot pain and cannot walk for any distance.  The foot begins to hurt and I favor it and then goes the knee.  What kind of exercise can I do to get the benefits I got from walking?

Maybe you should try to figure out what is causing the foot pain and recify that instead of finding a different exercise.  I would look first at your shoes.

Swimming should be easy on the feet but most exercise require that you be on your feet.
The podiatrist say's it is arthritis from a fallen arch some 20 years ago.   I have spent hundreds of dollars on shoes; however, although I can still walk the distance, I can't gain any speed without making the foot worse.  Then I am down for 3 to 4 days.
I wonder if walking poles would help take some weight off your feet?  I've never used them so not to sure...
What about pilates?  There's lots of weight training you can do that doesn't require standing or perhaps spin or bicycling. I have high arches that haven't fallen yet and bicycling sometimes gives me a foot cramp, but other than that it could be a nice alternative.

Get creative...I'm sure you'll find something.
Hello imjuspickin. I am new to this community, but having read your post, I wonder if the following might help. I recently bought a pair of MBTs (masai barefoot technology). They have really helped with my back and posture and a gammy right knee. I read that, if used correctly (they are strictly sports medical equipment, as opposed to training shoes per se) they can help the muscles in your feet to rebuild fallen arches. Anyway, I wonder if it is something you could at least look into. They might just help. I walk c. 20 miles a week in them and cannot believe the difference they have made - toning, cellulite, posture. Well, just a thought .... I hope you can fix your problem though - swimming is fantastic, and less strain on joints or feet. Best of luck. :-)
