How much exercise do you get during your pregnancy?

Quote  |  Reply

I was wondering how much exercise the average pregnant lady gets and what kind she does.

Before I got pregnant I worked out one hour every day. In my first trimester when I was puking up all my food I stopped exercising almost entirely. Now I am 23 weeks pregnant and I am gradually increasing my exercise from 30 minutes a day (which I started up again at around 12 weeks) to 60 minutes a day. I usually walk 30 min in the morning and then either walk an extra 30 minutes at night with my husband or I do a 30 min weighted aerobic routine in the afternoon while my son sleeps. I do this 6 days a week and then on Mondays I have started a prenatal yoga class which I believe is my day of rest. I really don't feel its a work out its just good stretching and meditation.

Do any of you still run? I used to run nearly everyday but I heard the bouncing isn't good for the baby. When you work out do you feel pain in your pelvis or legs? Just wondering how everyone is feeling.

hi, i never had any morning sickness so i have been exercising everyday for an hour as i did b/f i was pregnant. i am not running although, i love to run, i do the elliptical trainer as i have one in my basement. i also exercised vigourisly when pregnant with my first.

i sometimes have pain in my legs but i am only 14 weeks so far...

good luck, i am sure all will be fine:)

The rule of thumb is (and please check with your doctor) if you did it before your pregnancy and didn't take a break from it (i.e. running) then you can continue to do it.

I have a prenatal workout dvd that I do and a prenatal yoga dvd. The yoga is amazing for me! I try not to set a schedule because I can get really down on myself for not following thru. Sometimes I'm just too tired! I know it can help with the fatigue but pregnancy tired and nonpregnancy tired are two different worlds!

I plan to at least keep up with the yoga regularly and start walking each day for at least 30 minutes once the weather cools off here, I'm in FL! Also, I plan to do some leisurely bike rides when it cools... no hills, etc.. just some movement!

Congrats!!!!

I, like you, stopped exercising altogether during the first trimester due to horrible morning sickness. I tried to keep it up but wound up getting extremely dizzy after exercise so I figured my body was trying to tell me something! I tried to get back into exercising once the sickness passed but I was so tired all the time that I could hardly stay awake after work. I found out that I was anemic and started taking iron supplements. That seemed to help a little. I still had trouble with aerobic exercising so I try to walk around the neighborhood as much as possible. I also try to do a lot of yardwork and work around our house just so I'm not sitting on my butt in front of the television (that's what I really want to do!).

I had hip problems before becoming pregnant and they did worsen once I hit the third trimester. I have started having problems with my pelvis, as well. It pops (which is the most horrid feeling in the world) and is just achey all the time. I highly doubt I could have run during pregnancy but I also didn't run beforehand. The baby is cushioned by all the amniotic fluid so I don't think it's bad for the baby. You are supposed to check with your doctor before exercising.

The only reason the bouncing wouldn'd be good is because it can cause the mother to pull or stress a ligament. The pain is probably round ligament pain. Try some swimming or water aerobics. It helps with the lower back and pelvic pain.
