Is an exercise video as effective as the treadmill?

I know for optimal weight loss/management it's best to incorporate both aerobic/cardio exercise, and weight training, so since I go to the gym only every other day, I was wondering if doing aerobic workout at home through an exercise video is just as good as spending those 40 minutes on a machine. I usually do Jillian Michael's Banish Fat, Boost Metabolism.
Answer
An aerobic exercise video is as good as biking, running, skating, and the machines at the gym. When it comes to keeping the heart pumping for an extended period, all of those activities will do the trick. By definition, aerobic exercise increases the heart rate and the rate of respiration, and so calculate your Target Heart Rate (THR) zone and then monitor your heart rate during exercise either by checking your pulse or by using a heart rate monitor to make sure you are in the zone. Read about heart rate monitors from the Guide to Exercise at About.com.
