Exercised Induced headache/migraine

Quote  |  Reply

Anyone experienced headaches turning to migraine after working out?  I hike for at least 2 hours and when I hike in the mornings only...I get a headache/migraine afterwards.

What can I do to prevent this from happening?  Do I eat more protein or Carbs.  I am trying to keep myself hydrated while I hike.

Mary had something about that a while ago - not precisely the same issue, but if you're leaning your head forward or walk with excessively tight shoulders you'll have the same sort of tension headaches.

Some posture work could come in useful to correct that forward lean - barbell or dumbbell rows to strengthen the upper back, and stretch out the chest so you don't have a too-tight pec minor pulling your shoulders forward in spite of training your back ;)

I did get headaches that turned into migraine after my runs (at least 5K) a few times only though but not all the time.  I noticed that it happens to me everytime I wear a knit cap or any hat that is fully covered on top...when my sweat doesn't get released from it because of the cover, then I start getting headache even when I'm still running, then an hour or two later, I get a full blown migraine.

When I run, I always wear a hat that is open on the top of the head...and I always make sure it's not tight around my head...when I do this, I'm fine even if I run 10 miles straight.

Try to observe what triggers your migraine when you do those activities that you're doing because to me, it started when I changed my head cover...and when I went back to my old hat, I was fine.

It could also be that you're not getting enough hydration when you working out too hard...hiking could make you really dehydrated especially when you sweat a lot.

Hope you find your source of migraine, otherwise you might want to carry some headache medicine with you when you go out for a hike so you could easily disrupt it when you feel it coming.

Good luck!!!
