Are there exercises that aren't strenuous to the feet?
I am trying to lose weight by counting calories. I also want to add a workout to my daily routine to help with the weigh loss. However, I have a rare vascular disease that makes me unable to put too much strain on my feet. For example, I can only walk for about 5-10 minutes at a time.
Can anyone suggest some sort of cardio, or weight loss fitness routine that isn't hard on the feet? Thanks.
have you tried the elliptical or something that allows your feet to remain stationary, or the stationary bike. these are good for cardio but the bike especially shouldn't be hard on your feet =]
Weight training is pretty low impact. I don't know if your feet would be ok with squats, but you could definitely do upper body exercises, like pullups, pushups (or bench press), shoulder press, and rows.
hi, i have feet problems too. i walked for a long as i could.... which was only about 10 mins.... i would time my walks.... but i would try it 2 or 3 times a day.... i didnt push i did what i could.... slowly and a year and a half later i am up to 30 mins. 2 times a day.... but if you did 10 mins. 3 times a day that equals 30 mins a day.... i have been told that 10 mins wont help or spliting it up wont help... but it does!! or it did help me!! as i have lost 43 pounds to date. good luck to ya!! hope this helps a bit....
The problem is that in order to get the greatest cardio vascular benefit you want to use your biggest muscles, the gluts, quads, and hamstrings. It is very hard to engage these muscles without employing the feet. You might try cycling since it is non weight baring. Keep the resistance low and your pedal speed high to maximize the cardio benefit while minimize the impact on the feet.
i agree. swimming is great.
I bought a Gazelle and i love it. It was the best $99 dollars I have ever spent. You get the effect of walking or running but not the impact on your legs. Its great for the days I don't have time to drive back and forth to the gym. Plus it folds up so its not in the way. I get a great workout on it.
I agree with the commentors above regarding swimming. You can get a great cardio benefit without having to put any weight (seriously, zero pressure) or stress on your feet's vascular network.
Sometimes, you have to walk as you can. There are many people who can only walk for 10 minutes at a time. Do these mini walks several times a day and it really does make a real difference. Folks used to think that if you couldn't exrcise for at least 30 minutes at a time, then it wasn't doing much good. Recent studies have shown that several mini exercise workouts is just as good, and can actually do wonders for keeping metabolism higher.
That said, water aerobics rocks! I have to be careful of my knees, and water aerobics is a good workout that's easy on the joints. You don't even have to be able to swim to do it. Me, I can't swim, and I'm afraid of water over hy head, but I'm just fine in water aerobics.
