Exercises for the inactive?

Quote  |  Reply

I am in terrible shape. I'm not that overweight but I have never pushed myself beyond very basic exercise, like walking. I'd like to up my activity level slowly to the point of being in much better cardiovascular shape.

What sorts of exercises should I do?

I would suggest you start slow, with low-impact exercises that build your endurance gradually.  I was very out of shape last year, after being overworked and spending most of my time in the office.  I went out and got a balance ball DVD set that a friend recommended from Target.  I did that consistently (practically daily, with one day of rest) for about 8 weeks, until I found it no longer challenging.  I also got myself back to the tennis courts (my childhood/teenage sport), although at first I was barely able to run after the ball :D I gradually got other DVDs and I am now discovering running and HIIT, as well as being back to playing tennis the way I used to!

I am not a gym member, and I do not have access to free weights except for 10lb dumbells of my husband's that I've unearthed, so I do not know whether that would be a good suggestion for a beginner.  I am sure others on this forum will be able to give you their opinion on that.  I am just telling you what worked for me.

Whatever you do, make sure it is something you enjoy!!  That will certainly keep you interested and coming back for more :)

Good luck!!

edited to add: the walking you have been doing is great!  maybe keep that up and slowly start to increase your pace?? go for walks in more challenging areas (with hills, etc)?

walking is a great starting point.  just pick up the pace and add some hills to start.  if you have access to a trail system, that will help, too.  then as the hills start to feel easier, you can add in some jogging.  you'll be surprised how quickly your fitness improves if you push yourself.

variety is important too, especially if you're prone to boredom.  trying something new every month might be a good policy (i'd like to say i do that, but i don't.  i have a mental block about any exercise that doesn't include my dog, so as much as i love yoga, as much as i think i'd love rowing and paddling, i probably won't do them - at least not often).

Thank you for your suggestions!

These are good suggestions, coupled with: start slowly and proceed gradually. The Exercise tab on CC has lots of Beginner suggestions. I found myself drawn to the exercise ball and bands. One of the exercises listed is the Office Workout. That is an amazingly easy, simple workout that still works most of your body.

The other thing, and this is not cheap, is wii fit. The game has so many exercises, presented as games, that even the most out of shape, fragile and rickety person (me) can do. The more I do, the more I want to do. It's easy and fun, and it is something I can do a little or a lot, building on what works for me. I've been very happy with my results over the past 4 months.

Good luck and don't give up. Keep coming back.
