Exercising to lose weight; but appetite is increasing!
I'm exercising heavily to lose weight, but now I'm hungry all the time! Does anyone have any suggestions for how to curb my appetite so that I don't eat up all the calories I've just burned?
Reason: Moved from Calorie Count Forum to Fitness
OBVIOUSLY your appetite is increasing.. you're using up more energy and so your body requires more energy. make sure you're eating enough for the amount of exercise you're doing. don't expect to eat 1200 cals, exercise 5-6 times a week and be okay. if you don't like having such a huge appetite, cut back on your exercise a little.. if not, then simply eat more.
I was just reading about how virgorous activity/workouts may actually increase our appettite by 83 percent and slow our metabolisms. It was in the magazine, First, about going walking slower actually may burn up to 146 percent more fat and keep the hungries at bay. It suggests a 30 minutes moderate walk, even to break it down to 10 minutes 3x a day if possible.
Make sure you're eating within the suggested 1000-calorie defecit, and that you're eating more than 1200 cals/day. Other than that... Try eating more fiber or protein. I know that a 120-cal protein shake after a workout takes the edge off of the extra hunger for me.

Sounds like BS to me. Stay upwind of it.

Calorie for calorie, higher intensity exercises burn more fat (source).
I just stopped doing treadmill workouts just for that reason. Just makes me WAY too hungry. I only burn 150-190 calories in a half hour workout but am starving for the rest of the day.
I already walk 7-10 miles a night at work, which burns 700-1000 calories without counting lifting and carrying. I also burn 700 with my barn work and riding.
I can do the above, eat 1500-1600 calories and feel satisfied. Add that treadmill and I am starved.
No advice, just know what you are going through. For me, my lifestyle already burns mass calories without added exercise.
Last year I worked about in the mornings about 4 days a week and I would be starving ALL DAY LONG. I would eat thinking that working out is more powerful than food choices when dieting (I have learned better since then).
Anyways, this year it's different. Now I workout 5 hours a week around 5pm (after work). I eat most of my cals, proteins and fiber for the day before I even hit the gym. Then I come home prepare dinner and eat. i'm sedentary during the day, but my cal intake changes EVERYDAY. SOme days I'm just maintaining and most days I'm around 1600 (whether working out or not).
So far, I've lost 15 pounds and I'm RARELY hungry. So, maybe you should switch your workout schedule around or even your meals around so that you keep the cravings away.
Also, i eat pretty much throughout the day (mini meals and snacks) and that keeps me satisfied.
Good luck.
I agree with a few of the others. Obviously your body needs fuel since you are exercising and burining it all up. Try eating foods that are higher in protein and fiber. Cottage cheese, egg whites, peanut butter, and protein shakes w/ milk are all some options you might consider adding to your diet if you haven't already. Be patient. You'll figure out a balanced diet that will work for you, even if it takes a little experimenting.
Good luck!!
