Does your girlfriend/boyfriend/spouse bring up their ex(es)? How often? How does it make you feel?
My boyfriend used to bring up his ex kind of a lot, probably without realizing how often. Even though they've been broken up for over a year and a half and they live in different cities (aka no chance of hooking back up) it still mademe feel very insecure. Like she was still on his mind when he was with me.
I recently told him even though it had bothered me for a while, which is my fault. He said he would never bring her up again, but I still feel bad. I'm not quite sure what to do. To top it off, I feel silly for overreacting.
Does anyone have experience with this or advice they can offer? :/
You did the right thing by talking to him about it. He probably didn't even realize how often he was doing it. If he starts doing it again, tell him how you feel again. But also remember that he does have exes, and those experiences probably make up an important part of who he is, just like any relationship. What matters is that he's with you and cares about you now.
not a lot unless we're trying to work out a problem. ie "my ex used to do this, which is why I feel this way...."
Not often. but when he does I get a little pang. Silly really, because obviously they broke up for a reason and she lives thousands of miles away, but now and then I wonder if he wishes they were still together - based on nothing at all, except that they still have an amicable relationship.
He doesn't hide the fact that they email each other occasionally (he shows me the emails, they are not flirty at all, just how are your parents, the dogs, what is the weather like etc).
I guess the difference between us in that respect is so glaring because his comments about his ex are mostly positive and my comments about my ex are the opposite.
