Have any experience with Yasmin birth control pill?

Quote  |  Reply

I just started taking Yasmin 3 days ago. I am sort of scared because I read many forums online while researching it, and some women have had frightening experiences. I supposed all BC pills react differently with different bodies. Many women had good experiences to report too.

My main reason for taking them is that my menstrual cramps are getting worse lately and are nearly unbearable/ Advil does nothing.  So it's been 3 days and I'm not bald, blind or dead yet so that's encouraging. I hope I'm one of the women who this pill helps with cramps and I won't complain if I lose 5 pounds either.

my daughter takes yasmin, and she hasn't had any problems with it, but I think you should discuss your concerns with your doctor, he/she will be able to address all of your concerns, and I know that will make you feel better about taking the medication.

You are absolutely right that all BC pills react differently with different bodies. For eg, my body could never sustain Yaz, so I changed to Yasmin and had taken it for an year.

Never had any allergies/reactions. Used to feel nauseated but that went away when I started taking them in nights before sleeping. My weight loss/management was also consistent with the exercise and diet.

Only problem was, not sure if I should relate this to the pill, I used to feel depressed.

I have taken Yasmin for a year, and have never had any problems.  It is a very "low dose" pill - compared to Diane/Estelle etc which contain very high levels of eostrogen (sp?) and can have negative health effects - including weight gain!  I put on almost 20 lbs when I was taking Estelle!

My sister and best friend also take Yasmin, neither of them have suffered any negative side effects.

I took Yasmin for about 6 months and absolutely loved it! I had been on mycrogynon 20 ED (which im currently on now) for about 3 yrs before taking yasmin, because of incredibly bad cramps. being a teenager, my doc suggested yasmin for pimples, which werent even very bad...but boy could i see the difference afterwards :) im pleased to say that since being off yasmin for about 7 mths my skin is still great, so im a huge fan :D

i've had no side-effects on either mycrogynon or yasmin, only blissful relief during that time of the month :)

Go Yasmin!

I guess it really depends on the person. I've been on both Yaz and Yasmin, and hated both of them. I had worse cramps (than what I had on other pills, which is the reason I went on in the first place). I also had breakthrough bleeding and terrible headaches during my period. Yeah personally, if you are solely taking it for the cramps, from my experience it doesn't work so well. Hopefully you'll have better luck!
Yasmin was the only pill I could not take for more than a few months. The surprise breakthrough bleeding on my vacation was the final straw. I wouldn't expect it to help you lose any weight, although you might not gain as much on it as on some others.
I too had ugly cramps and completely uncontrolable flows...yasmine was a godsend for those things, except it also brought my VERY healthy sex drive to a screaching halt.    It was incredibly strange to go from  on average 8 times a week to once every two weekes.  I have since switched to Trivoria and it's ok.  It does a decent job of controlling the cramps and my 'flow' does stay put.
Thanks for the testimonies. Some women said Yasmin caused them to lose weight. Anyway, It's been 5 days now. Menstruation was slightly unusual but nothing crazy. I don't think it's taking complete effect yet. My doctor told me to wait 3 months before I make any decisions about it's effectiveness/ side effects. Of course unless it causes some awful reaction before then.
It made my hair fall out and really did not reduce my cramps any. It is such a low-dose pill, it does not help much if your taking it for cramping.
I have been on Yasmin for over 3 years (and taking BC for about 15yrs).
I LOVE it.
The one thing that you need to keep in mind is that, unlike most other BC pills, Yasmin actually does dehydrate you somewhat, (opposite of the usual water retention you associate with BC), so you need to make sure you drink  your water!!!! However, since that is a bonus when counting calories and eating well, it is a double benefit :)

I actually take it on a continuous cycle, so I don't have a period (haven't for 3 years and it's lovely :), so I can't speak for the flow or spotting or anything.

Otherwise, Yasmin has my complete endorsement!

Are you sure your pain is directly related to menstrual cramps or can you localize it to only an ovary or one area?  Endometriosis and PCOS could also be culprits for pain and should be explored by your doctor if your cramps do no improve.  With any oral contraceptive there are risks involved.  Is the benefit of not becoming pregnant worth it to you at this stage in your life?  Just a simple question to ask yourself if you feel the need to be on something yet still have concerns.

I can only guess that my cramps are menstruation related as they only happen while I am menstruating. The day that my doctor prescribed me the Yasmin (about 10 days ago) he did a swab and examination, so I assume if the test results reveal anything problematic as far as endometriosis or anything he will let me know.

I am aware of the risks of the pill, I just thought it would be a good way to "kill two birds with one stone" as I need help with my severe menstrual pain as well as a way to delay pregnancy at this point. My husband and I actually would prefer to have kids asap but we are trying to better our financial situation. We are quite poor at the time, and can't afford a car and other things we need. We would prefer to not be on welfare when a baby comes along.

I have thought a lot about the risks and I'm going to stop taking this pill if bad things start happening, but unfortunatly there's really no way to tell how my personal body will take it unless I try it. Fortunately the risk of death from a BC pill is almost unheard of especially for a non-smoker like me.

Endometriosis can only be officially diagnosed through laparoscopic surgery, but it can also be sometimes detected if you have chocolate cysts through an ultrasound.  And unfortunately it's such a quiet little problem that most doctors don't even think about it, or even worse ignore your concerns or tell you it's all in your head.

The kind of trademark symptoms seem to be heavy, long, and very painful periods.  There's a host of other symptoms, and some people with endo have little to no symptoms at all.  But basically the bottom line is that if you're in a lot of pain that's not normal and you don't have to deal with it.

I'm not saying you have endo at all, just don't trust your doctor to tell you you have it.  Hopefully Yasmin will work very well for you. :)  (I have no experience with it myself.)  Just remember that it takes about 3 months for "temporary" side effects of HBC to go away, and usually the ones that linger are there to stay.  And remember there are a ton of different pills out there and if you don't like this one there's no reason to stay on it.

Good luck! :)
