To what extent are you girls influenced by models?

Quote  |  Reply

I admit to have been influenced by them alot in the past. When i was a teenager, i thought i would be happy and beautiful just like the peppy models you see walking down the runway.

What do you consider to be a healthy weight for a model?

I think as you get older you get more comfortable in your skin. Not saying that I don't have insecure moments, but they are a lot less frequent/intense as I have gotten older. I've also heard many other women say they feel the same. So, something to look forward to younginsLaughing

Funny, I came across this topic right now, I am feeling generally down on my body image these days, I get so frustrated at my wardrobe and my lack of cool clothes, and Im sometimes afraid to try stuff on in the morning because I dont wanna feel even worse when they dont look well, and Im wondering if the saturation of London fashion week in the media at the moment is penetrating my self image. Mostly I find model perfection just unattainable, style blogs influence me more, because they are real people and not airbrushed, but very stylish and invariably tiny slim agghhh - frustration!! Also tall one here 5'10 and didnt fnd that too insensitive, each to their own.

way to diss tall people- very offensive! This place should be a kind environment for weight loss.

i don't see how i dissed tall people. i never said tall people were bad or worse, etc.  i said that i enjoy seeing short people or people with heights similar to mine in clothing that i like rather than taller people.  obviously, this is because i can compare how certain items that may not always look good on short people may look on me.  perhaps you are easily offended or you mistook my statement for something it was not.

and i never actually said 'tall people' (until now);  i said models, and the aesthetics promoting them.  i can not imagine myself as a model of taller height because that is not what i am, therefore it would be ridiculous for me to aim for something like them that i will not attain with my height. i cant wear certain pants in certain styles. it makes me look stumpy. that is a fact i cannot remove.  that is why i appreciate short people who wear the clothes i like

enough said.

I'm not looking for an argument, kay? It was offensive becuase being tall is difficult unless you're a slim and beautiful model.

no, im influenced by what jiggles on my body more than it should.

I would have to say I used to be greatly influenced by very slim models. I felt as if I couldn't be beautiful if I wasn't as skinny as they are. Which I now realize is insanely wrong. Most models are at a very unhealthy weight, I think the fashion industry should definitely change, models should be accepted at any height and weight. I know there are now plus size models, but wheres the shorties?? Haha.

i dont think anyone can say they havent been influenced a LOT by models... we see them everywhere, its hard not to compare yourself. its what we do as humans... Victorias Secrets models are the most 'realistic' i think... obviously not girl next door, but they do have achievable body types. it'd just take a toooon of work. I'd rather look like Marisa Miller, or Britney Spears than Ana Carolina Reston (a brazilian model who died of complications of anorexia in 2006).

Its just hard to remember that when you go to a dance/soccer/hockey focused highschool, and you do none of those things :P

I'm affected by the media, but more by actresses. I've acted my entire life and it's my passion as well as what I would love to do with my life. So, when I see pictures of slim and toned actresses, I remind myself that I should look like that. I know they have personal trainers and nutritionists and the like, but at first glance, I can't help but feel that if I were a few pounds lighter, I would be able to be as successful as they are.

I've gotten a lot better about it and I'm coming to terms that my body is my body, and that all actresses aren't stick thin. That's what I keep in mind.

lol bring short is difficult too! being average is difficult!! being alive is difficult!!! being sad is difficult!!!  so it all equals out in the end.

never say never

I'm not influence by models at all, considering I know the arts of photoshop and such

But I am really affected by real life people, the ones that I consider really, really pretty. Most of the ones that I look up to are always really pretty and really slim, and always appear happy. That's real to me, so they always make me feel like crap and make me feel like I need to work harder to be better too.

I think bxca knows what's going on. Also If you know that the camera adds 10+ pounds on these stick figures imagine what these gals look like in real life?! ew! And most guys I know agree that's too skinny too. When I'm actually near someone that IS that skinny I feel sorry for them and think "I'm soo glad I get to eat!".  LOL!

I have to admit though I try to size myself up to athletic models like the ones featured in Title Nine and Athleta clothes catalogues.  I know one of these use real women who aren't all 5'9"+ and they look huge compared to run-way models but then I feel down when I know they're probably a size four which is unrealistic for me to get to...  but they do look amazing and healthy and probably are compared to Vogue models and most movie stars.

I'm there with you gals!

Christina Hendricks has the sexiest body I have ever laid eyes on..and she is busty *giggles*

I'd prefer to be like that..

I would totally go lesbo for her Tongue out

I had no idea who that is, so I googled her.

OH MY GOD! Now that's what I call a classic feminine beauty! I'm  totally with you here, hot damn...

I'm more influenced by my boyfriend's reaction to women than the women themselves. I used to have absolutely no problem looking at and even admiring pretty women, and I enjoyed looking at a beautiful person. When my boyfriend is being estatic about his favorite girls (keira Knightly, Emma Watson and Jessica Alba, typically) I feel totally unattractive. When I found his Playboy and Passie (nastier version of Playboy) stashes, I signed up on CC.

I'm not an expert on boyfirends, but you should sign up for CC if you have a real reason for feeling heavy. Not if your boyfriend makes you feel uncomfortable. Tell him to get rid of his porn.
