I love to cook, and I like to use ingredients that are low-cal but add INTENSE flavor to food. What are some that you use?

Some of my favorites:

Roasted red peppers (about FIVE calories an ounce!)

Fresh Basil

Smoked Salmon

Caremelized onions

Ideas?

Im a big fan of oregano - very distinctive taste too.

Cilantro & chopped onion

Garlic
Not extremely low cal, but I love toasted slivered almonds on salads, in pilafs, and in oatmeal. It really doesn't take too much for the flavor to come through, maybe 1/8 to 1/4 oz.
Garlic powder and curry powder are two of my staples.  Also, a teaspoon of Parmesan cheese or feta cheese is only 7 calories, but a small amount really adds a lot of flavor.

I'm with you on the olives and balsamic, Molly. Never used much sage. What's it good in?

Oh, and I forgot: gorgonzola cheese, which DOES have fat, but just a tablespoon is sooooo good.

Thanks everyone for posting. More ideas welcome.

wasabi!
just a little bit. with fish or fake crabmeat. or, with a bit of vinegar and oil, as a marinade for fish.

Salsa - I can't seem to have eggs without the stuff.

And lately my big thing has been pumpkin - specifically adding it to sugar free pudding and my morning hot cereal.

Wow! The pumpkin in hot cereal idea sounds luscious. I'm sooooo trying that.
GARLIC :-P
  • Oregano
  • Cilantro
  • Garlic
  • Onions
I just realized that the "favor" in this thread title should have said "flavor". Oops. The tips are helpful, but I don't know if they count as being an extreme favor!

Sage is used in Greek, Italian, and European cuisines. It is used to season meats, poultry, and fish. Sage has been traditionally used for its antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.  It's wonderful in marinades or as a "rub" on meats.

it might just be me being scandinavian, but EVERYTHING is better with lots of garlic, dill, and mustard! haha. i'm also big on curry, tumeric, paprika, and red pepper flakes. and cilantro. and cinnamon and nutmeg (in oatmeal, perhaps mixed with some pumpkin...drool). also, a squeeze of lemon juice at the end of cooking just about any cuisine really adds brightness/freshness to your food, or maybe that's just me.
I'm finding that once I cut out a lot of salt, I started to cravy spicy. So... curry, salsa, and jalapenos!
besides garlic, peppers, cinnamon and onion-
my favorite thing- in the world- on any veggie or meat-
panda express house sauce!
i dunno anything about the calories but it barely takes a teaspoon to make your taste buds happy.
Cinnamon, garlic, onion powder, Mrs. Dash seasoning, peppers

(not at the same time : P)
