Facebook Chat Scam
So, something similar to what happened in this story happened to me last night:
http://www.businessinsider.com/2009/1/nigeria n-scammers-still-roosting-on-facebook
Granted, I did not make friends with my scammer, I just called him/her out on the scam and left it at that.
I just thought I'd share...and tell you all to be careful!
I would've asked a more complex question that facebook wouldn't have and they couldn't guess. Like "What is the tattoo on my ___ of?" or "What is my # (if you don't have it on FB, I don't)?" or even ask them about their family.
Yeah, my suspicion originally arose from the fact that I only know this girl from high school. But, I played along to see how far the scammer would go. It was almost comical. The spelling and grammar were horrible and the scammer used EVERY excuse in the book. I wouldn't ever send more than $50 to my closest friend because I think money/debts between friends are a bad idea. So, the $980 she was asking for was a no-go from the start.
Lucky for me I don't have any money to give my friends. I guess being broke has its advantages.
I've been to Lagos. Even when he says Lagos a nice place to visit he is scamming. It is a very interesting place to visit but it is not in any way nice.
Several of my mom's friends have had their email accts hacked, and mass emailed their contacts with this "I'm stuck in ___, send money."
Mostly because they actually clicked on the email supposedly from gmail or yahoo that said "click here and enter your user name and password"
I had a friend who emailed back and forth with a deposed prince of nigeria for a while. At some point sent him a picture of Pierce Brosnan saying "This is me, just so you know I'm a real person." It was wonderful.
WOW. I mean, you have to be pretty sheltered in your internet usage to fall victim to these people, but if someone was IMing me with a friend's facebook account it'd cause me to think twice. Before, of course, asking a personal question.
It just sucks that they get away with it!! It's still stealing.
