facial moisturizer

Quote  |  Reply

I was at Sephora this past weekend buying makeup and the saleslady asked me what type of facial moisturizer I used. I don't use any. She asked me how old I was, and when I told her I was 21 she didn't say anything. Usually they will suggest a moisturizer for you to try (I would, at least to make a sale), but she left me hanging.

So she got me wondering. Should I be using a facial moisturizer? I have fairly good skin, and I've never used one before. If I'm wearing powder makeup do I need a moisturizer underneath?

I would guess that I have combination skin. My t-zone is dry, and my chin and hairline is slightly oily.

Any suggestions?

If you get into the habit of moisturizing now, your face will thank you when you're fifty.

Yes, you should definitely be using facial moisturizer.  You should always apply a moisturizer to your skin before putting on any makeup.  I also use a "makeup primer" if I am going to put on liquid foundation (which is rare).  You should also get a moisturizer for around the eye area as well.

I use avon products on my skin.  They work great for me (you can see in my photos).  However, you really just need to do some trial and error to find out what works best for your skin.

I have been using oil of olay (oil free) since college. I am now almost 37. Most people think I'm in my late 20's. I started using it because it's what my mom always used and she looks amazing for her age. It's cheap and it's light and doesn't make my face feel greasy and heavy.

And yes, ditto kbella24 on the eye cream. For my eye area I use Clinique "all about eyes." I have tried a ton of eye creams and that has been my fave, have used it for years. I am not so much concerned about wrinkles but I have circles under my eyes which are genetic, and usually my eyes are kinda puffy in the morning. I didn't have that when I was 21 :). But now that I am nearing middle aged it's more noticeable and the eye cream helps so much. Start early with the stuff and you'll have less problems later.

Best moisturizing products for the money, IMO, are from Oil of Olay.  Their daily SPF 15 oil free moisturizer is great (and I have combo skin as well).  Their eye creams are little more pricey, but not as much as other lines, and they work just as well.  Walgreen's is your friend.  Laughing

Hi.

I did not use moisturizer until I was in my 30's but I always used sun block on my face.

I lived in a very moist environment that it felt terrible when I did use moisturizer. I am now 45 and most people think I am in my 30's.

I have used Dermalogica for years and I think it is the best and it does not have any smell.

Good Luck.

All i have to say is --- Oil of Olay!! lol

I have always used Mary Kay basic face cleaning set, that has a moisturizer and it's nice, but money wise, I have always heard good things as everyone else mentioned - oil of olay

My daughter has very sensitive skin and needs a moisturizer for her arms and face sometimes. On her I just use Vanicream (my husband uses it sometimes too) vanicream now also comes as a bath soap, and she uses that also (before she used cetaphil) all very very good for your skin.

Oil of Olay!

Seriously?  Everyone here uses oil of olay?

That seems weird.

I just bought a yogurt and aloe moisturizer from a local company that handmakes their stuff.  It's pretty nice.

Before that I used Burt's Bees.  I don't want to put parabens and phthalates on my face.

why would oil of olay be weird?

I use the ooo general moisturizer during the day and one of their more deeply moisturizing ones at night. can't remember which one but it makes your skin a more even tone.

It's cheap and it works.   I'm not sure how it's weird.

I make my own facial scrub out of cornmeal, buttermilk, honey, and tea tree oil - my hubby thinks that's weird.

I do a scrub with almond or avocado oil + sugar + tea tree oil!

Aveda is really good, I use their sensitive skin moisturizer...you don't need much and it's not too heavy.

Recently started doing doing a daily facial massage with olive oil and a touch of caster oil (warm wet washcloths to remove the oil by dabbing). Haven't needed further moisturizer.

Used to use alternate between oil of olay and ponds. Cheap and far fewer unrecognizable ingredients to rub into your skin! I still have a jar of ponds for when I go on trips so I don't have to worry about olive oil spills.

My Mom used Ponds her whole life and is 76 with gorgeous skin.

Not weird to use oil of olay just weird that everyone was saying that's what they used.  There are so many moisturizers out there that I'd think there'd be a lot of different responses.

Well, it's been around for over 50 years - I suspect a lot of people have just grown up with it.

I've also tried Hope in a Jar by Philosophy - it's fabulous, but too expensive.

yeah, that was a little surprising!

I started with the regular OOO. Then I tried several different ones, aveeno, uh... uh.. heck, I don't remember, it was so long ago! But I either hated the smell, the feel, or how it worked/didn't work (oily, dry, acne, etc.) but OOO works best with my face.

My biggest issue is cleansers. I really liked biore's regular face cleanser (i'm sure there was another name for it, bah) and they big fat discontinued it! I was LIVID, I still am, because I haven't found a good cleanser like that. I use a neutrogena one now, I think, and it is pretty good, but doesn't quite cleanse as good, but it is not harsh.

and don't get me started on pantyliners! I had it out with Always on the phone for discontinuing my favorites!!!

I've been using moisturizer since I was about 15. I'm 20 now and started using night moisturizer and eye cream last year. My skin actually glows now, and I never get negative comments about how pale my skin is anymore.

I use the "Simple" cleansers/toners/moisturizers etc, just because they're, well, simple I guess haha. At our age the worst thing to do would be to be putting on a moisturizer with too many chemicals and stuff in it.

Oh, and a really good once a week exfoliator to use it bicarbonate of soda. Cheap, no random chemicals in it and it's not too harsh on the skin.

i use a cheap tinting/moisturizing/sun-screening lotion, and it makes me feel like i'm doing something good for my skin, and on the days i dont use it i notice my face feeling funny, so i'd suggest it. :]
