Anyone else not a fan of fake food? If I'm going to eat something, it's going to be real food with real ingredients. No Cool Whip for me -- pass me the whipped cream instead, please!

Goes to the old saying "You are what you eat" doesn't it?

Lizalea your post could be understood in many ways :) Nice and not so nice at the same time.

I'm with athena_tavener I just don't believe that wannabe products are better for you when most of the time they aren't really.

Like sugar I'd rather have some real sugar and log the calories accordingly than have aspartame containing sweetener and get alzheimer's later on and ingest chemicals.

As for whipped cream I wasn't having any of the cool whip stuff on my pumpkin pie at thanksgiving I had the real stuff too. But I haven't had any of that since.

It's also all about "All in moderation" :)

Everything in moderation, even moderation!

I just can't bring myself to eat low fat, low sugar, low carb, lite, diet food.  It's not really worth eating.  I'd rather have a tablespoon of ice cream with full cream and egg yolks than a cup of the nasty low fat stuff.
I am against most fake foods.  I used to practically live off of diet products, and I never felt satisfied.  Then one day my bf forced me to get out of that mindset, and to go back to eating "real" food.  When I took my first bite of real cheese after a year of "fat free", I almost cried with happiness.  It really is all about moderation.  Now, instead of putting a whole slice of fat free cheese on my boca burger, I put 1/2 a slice of REAL colby jack, and it tastes SOOO much better.  Plus, it's much more natural and lower in sodium, with no chemicals.  I think that is the key.  Using smaller amounts of the real stuff.

Not a fan of fake food, no ma'am.

Even before I read Twinkie, Deconstructed I felt this way. But after reading it, ugh! an ingredient label means a lot more to me now.

Give it (butter, cheese, cream, what-have-you) to me straight up and I'll figure out the calorie allowance around it.

I don't have a problem with fake foods.

My favorite fake foods ....

Fat Free Cool Whip

Sugar Free Jello

Sugar Free popsicles

I Can't Believe It's Not Butter Spray

anything by Walden Farms (zero-calorie dressings, chocolate syrup, caramel, dip)

Oscar Mayer fat free bologna

Kraft fat free sharp cheddar singles

=^..^= MOLLY

While I definitely try to limit my intake of artificial foods (like Splenda) as much as I can, there are times where I'd rather enjoy a larger portion of a similar-tasting "diet" product--the kinds of foods you classify as "fake"--instead of an eeeensy weensy bit of, say, full-fat ice cream or butter, or whatever.

And while the actual nutritional content and health benefits of these so-called "fake" or "diet" foods is debatable, one thing that's concrete is their lower calorie, fat, and/or sugar content, and they can be a real godsend for those of us who simply can't afford to eat that much of the "real" stuff. :K

So I have to say that I don't really have a problem with "fake" food in relative moderation--depends on the stuff, though, of course.

LOL I haven't had Cool Whip in so many years... didn't even know it was fake. So aside from that I'm not a huge fan of fake food. I'm of the mentality "If you don't recognize most of the ingredients, don't eat it". I'd rather have a delicious dark chocolate bar and just work out a little longer at the gym than have sugar-free crap that kinda tastes like paste.

Personally, I'm with you.  If people want to eat chmically concocted versions of junk foods so that they can have the taste of junk, but not the calories, that is their business, but I'd personally rather develop my palate to appreciate healthful natural, homemade foods, and maybe have an occasional high-calorie (but not fake) treat.

Maybe some people aren't emotionally ready to let go of the junky comfort foods they grew up eating, and I don't blame them for that, but personally, I'm 38 years old and see no reason to keep eating "greasy kid stuff" or fake lo-cal versions of it.  I'd rather eat like an ADULT.

Not gonna lie--I definitely eat the fake stuff (ya know, low fat pasturized cheese [hey, they're cheaper!], a diet drink once a week, etc) and I think my taste buds have been trained to not really recognize that 'fake' taste (sad, I know)

however, since dating my boyfriend the past yr and a half (he's an amazing cook) I've learned that it's much better (and more enjoyable) to eat dainty amounts of delicate delicious full-flavor foods than eat larger amounts of food that just doesn't quite cut it.  Besides, if I'd ever suggest he or his father buy something low fat/sugar free at their house for me...oh boy, I think I'd be kicked to the curb!

(yah, his father makes this incredible peanut butter pie...fluffy heavy cream made pb filling that melts in your mouth with a thick layer of melted chocolate on top with a graham cracker crust...oh my, so rich that I slice the pie into 20ths instead of 8ths!  the worst thing is, his father makes this pie just for me...he doesn't even eat any of it!  Oh yes...give me the real stuff!)

I have no problem telling the truth: I have butter, real butter, in my fridge.  I seldom eat it but it is there.  Real peanut butter, too.  Margarine equals a divorce in my house.  My hubby is a super sweety but not when it comes to fake food.  Moderation is for sure the way to go.  I still eat real cheese but less of it.  We still have a hand wheat grinder and we still use it.  Also have a Foley food mill instead of a microwave- slower food is sometimes the way to go for me!  The only time I ever ate stuff like Cool Whip was when I visited my Mom.  Now that she has moved way across the country, I don't have to play with pretend chow.  The other day my hubby made dressing for a turkey and I went out to the front garden and brought back real sage leaves for him.
i cook. like crazy.  i used to cook EVERYTHING from scratch... i don't have the time right now or i still would.  there are places i'm willing to give up my real food, like i can't really taste the difference between store bought regular bread and diet bread and i like double churned ice cream anyway.  but if i'm cooking, it will have real ingredients, i don't skimp on anything.  i buy milk and butter and, if i'm making bread, buttermilk.  tomorrow i'm making my super pumpkin chocolate chip cookies for my sister :o)  and i will log every one i eat.  but i'd rather have 1 of those for 97 calories than an entire 100 calorie pack of chips a hoy thins :o)

I'm a fan of real food, for the most part lol. There are a couple things here and there, but mostly I make everything from scratch, and keep my fridge full of fresh fruits and veggies.

I am completely with you! Whole cheese, milk, quality butter, all natural PB (full fat), grainy bakery bread all the way! :) They're much more satisfying, and considering the absence of artificial ingredients, are much better for you in the long run than most lower-calorie alternatives.

Sadly, i like fake food too. =x

  • Low fat yogurt
  • Sugar free icecream [Or nondairy]
  • Low fat butter
  • 100 calorie popcorn
  • Sugar free maple syrup
  • Low fat dressing
  • Skim milk

That's it though! I do drink whole milk mostly but right now all we have is skim milk. x)

Fake.... as in full of artificial fillers, colors, sweeteners... things like that?

If so, then count me in as well! I refuse to eat food labeled as "diet" unless it's cheese. And I haven't seen much "diet cheese", lawlz.

how is 100 calorie popcorn "fake" food?  the only reason it is 100 calories is because of the serving size, not the ingredients....

I pretty much hate all "diet" foods, and any thing labeled "fat-free" will always get a pass from me (except skim milk).  Low-fat (because they don't seem to add all the sugar and other "mouth feel" items) don't bother me at all -- most of the time.

But -- I have to admit... I love Cool Whip.  I like Cool Whip more than regular whipped cream.  It is a sick little thing -- but it's mine (and I rarely indulge, anyway)

I think life's too short to waste it eating fake foods.  :-)   I much prefer to eat a small amount of something sensational and genuine than larger amounts of disappointing lookalikes.  I'm also wary of special diet products that claim to be healthier than the original natural food they've been created to replace.  The butter/margarine story is a good example of that one going ever so slightly awry.
