So I am a Calorie Counter... (duh right...)...
It seems like a lot of the artificial meats are high in calories... the sausage is 270 calories a serving and there are like 6 servings.. ug!
the only boca i will eat is the on that is 70 calories... (i only know it by looking... sorry...) but if you look at calories the chicken is like 120 as are some of the other..
i guess my big point is that just because it says vegan doesn't mean it is the best for you sometimes.. ???
I completely agree. That's why I've invested in TVP and about 40 types of spices/vegan sauces. You don't even need a recipe, just use what you think will taste good.
I have gotten AWAY from building my meals around a fake meat product. I rarely buy them anymore. I did in the past rely on them heavily, as that is how most people cook and prepare meals, in our society. I have found that most of them are very high in sodium, and calories. I love lentil loafs now!
I've had a different experience. There are a few products that I think taste great (like Nate's meatballs in the freezer section and Field Roast sausages in the refrigerator section).
While they may be a bit higher in calories, they are very high in protein. I've found that if I keep my protein in the 40-60mg per day range, that I have the most energy. It was hard for me to hit these numbers without consuming some soy/gluten-based products.

There are few fake meats that pass the test for me, but I am a huge fan of some. Tofurky products are always great and fairly low calorie ( 100 calories for 5 deli slices, makes an amazing sandwich ).
Also, Gardenburger black bean chipotle patties are great to cook with.
