Hey guys...

I didn't know where to post this...here or The Lounge, but I'm kinda freaking out so I hope someone here can help me.

I went to the doctor about a week ago for a UTI, and while I was there we discussed birth control as well.  She said she would have to do a pregnancy test first just to make sure I wasn't pregnant before beginning birth control, which was no big deal.

Well, she came back in the room and said there were 2 parts to my test results...1) I did have a UTI, and 2) My pregnancy test came back positive.

I totally freaked out because that was the last thing I was expecting.  I'm hoping it was a false positive and my boyfriend keeps insisting that it was...but I just don't know.  Here are the things that are confusing me...

1) The doctor got a positive test

2) I did 3 home tests and got all negative

3) I started my period last night

4) The first time I had EVER had sex was 3 days before that doctor appointment...could it show up that fast?  And I know it isn't 100% foolproof but we did use a condom.

So...given all of that...would you say it's most likely a false positive or am I still probably pregnant?  I have an appointment for tomorrow to get tested again and I'm so scared.  I have finals to do and I can't concentrate because I keep going back and forth with this in my mind.  Getting other opinions would really put my mind at ease...depending on what they are of course Tongue out

False positives very, very rarely exist. Pregnancy tests are designed to detect a hormone. Did you do a pee test or a blood test for the pregnancy test? Blood tests are more accurate, as they can detect smaller levels of the pregnancy hormone than regular home pregnancy tests.

Is your period like your normal period? It could be implantation bleeding, which many women confuse for their period. It could also be an early miscarriage. There are things called "chemical pregnancies," where the woman miscarriages very, very early and the only reason they knew they were pregnant was by taking a pregnancy test. Doesn't mean the test was a false positive, it just means that the pregnancy didn't stick.

The whole myth that you can't get pregnant your first time (as you found out) is just that--a myth. Good luck with your test tomorrow!

It's true that false positives are extremely rare.

It could be implantation bleeding but it's uncommon for pregnancy hormone levels to be detected before implantation. It's also extremely unlikely that your body would be producing the hormone a mere three days after intercourse.

Something's not right. I think you'll just have to wait and see the what the test results show today. Request a blood test, if possible.

Good luck!

Thank you for your replies.  The bleeding is very much like my menstrual bleeding -- very heavy and it is right when I was expecting it to come as well.

I also thought it was strange that they detected it from a urine sample 3 days after my first time having sex.  I knew that you could get pregnant the first time, I was just surprised, you know?

I will go in today for another test and see what happens, but I'm very nervous :(

Maybe they mixed up the test results with another patient's.

Okay, I'm not a doctor, but I'm pretty sure if the first time you'd ever had sex was three days beforehand, there's very little chance that the test was accurate. They are designed to look for a specific horomone in your body at a certain level (hence the time limit on pregnancy tests -- wait two mins, etc.). But even an "early" pregnancy test can't confirm a pregnancy even slightly accurately until about TWO WEEKS after you conceive. So... I would get a second opinion.

Just got back from the doctor and....

IT WAS A FALSE POSITIVE!!!!!

They ran the test again today, twice, and both were negative.  Also the fact that I started my period the day I expected it and the 3 negative home tests made the doctor confident enough to prescribe the birth control that I asked for before the positive Laughing

Congratulations! You're not gonna have a baby!!!

(My husband always says that after I get a negative pregnancy test! It makes us both laugh.)

Bummer about the UTI, though, those suck! I hope the antibiotics are working quickly! If you find that you are getting them often after having sex, it's possible that you have what they call a "vaginal urethra", like me. It's where your urethra is rather close to the opening to the vagina, and sex can push a lot of fluids and bacteria in there.

In any case, I'd recommend you start taking cranberry pills. They are really great and can stop that nasty infection from rearing it's ugly head, even if you're susceptable to them naturally.

Just a little unsolicited advice from a fellow sufferer!
