My Family, Our Nutritionist, and The Zone Diet!

Quote  |  Reply

So I've been bugging my parents for years to get my little brother, who is severely overweight at 15, to a nutritionist. They finally did and the apparently nutritionist says we should all be on The Zone Diet. Now I've gone over  it pretty thoroughly, and I think it's an excellent plan for my brother and my family, but I feel like it's not for me.

1) I already eat very healthy via CC, so I don't know what going to The Zone would help me with, and 2) I don't know how The Zone handles weight LOSS rather than just healthy maintenance.

It tells you to eat a LOT of fats, good fats, but fats, and it looks like eating all of the food it recommends would put me well over my calorie target! My parents say I should start eating a tbs of olive oil a day, or something like that. Ew?  It also tells you to eat at specific times even if you are not hungry. That's completely the opposite of what I'm doing currently, which is just satisfy my hunger whenever I feel like I need to.

Anyway, has anyone tried "Living in the Zone?"

hn? 4th page =(
I have never done the zone diet, but eating good fats is healthy within reason.  It can make your bad cholesterol much lower and have your good cholesterol rise(that's a good thing.) I myself follow south beach which uses the good fats as well.  Tell your parents you are doing fine with your plan and you will support your brother on his journey on losing weight by exercising with him ect.
The Zone diet is 30% of calories from fat. That is not excessive, especially if they are good fats!

In the past when dieting I got to a plateau, then the zone diet helped me to lose the last 5 pounds or so.  I tend to eat a very low fat diet, so having some extra (good) fat and protein s good because they take longer to digest than simple carbs and you don't get hungry as often.  The idea behind having a snack even when you're not hungry is that when meal time does come you won't be as starved and won't eat as much.  If I wait to eat til I'm really hungry I eat too fast and often grab something fast (which isn't as healthy) and then eat too much.  I can recommend the zone's "balance bar" especially in chocloate raspberry fudge, but try to eat only half at a time cuz they're 200 calories each.   They stick with you, and are just sweet enough to satisfy your  sweet tooth without causing sugar highs (or the corresponding lows)

BUT, I wouldn't recommend staying on the Zone diet long term, as eating  alot of protein takes calcium out of you bones and can be hard on your kidneys.  I would ask your nutritionist about that.  I used to work in a hospital, and the dietician's there were not fond of the Zone diet for that reason.  Perhaps your brother has high cholesterol so that is why it was recommended for him,  but it may not be for everyone.

Bottom line, short term, great, long term I would modify a bit. Good luck!
