i think 1700 is far too high.

Hi Guys,

I generally vary my diet, sometimes eating lots, sometimes not.

On the diet im on, im gonna eat about 500cal/day. i should drop the final 3 kilos in just over a week or two. I find my body responds to dramatic short term diets, btw those i generally eat as much if not more than the two men i live with. But i dont put on any weight in that period.

I also think these BMI tables are off, it says im underweight, when clearly i am not. I know i have about 3 kilos to lose and then i will need to go to gym to tone up. Currently i'm 5.8' and 59kilos. i wanna be 56kilos, maybe 55. I used to weight 69kilos just a few months ago.

Is there anyone here who agrees?

What's the point? Your BMI is already on the low end of the scale. You may not be underweight yet, but you're pretty damn close.

500 calories a day for a few days is pointless, and will leave you zapped of energy during that time. Losing more than 1 kg a week isn't really a good idea.
500 cal per day is way too low in my opinion.

I have from 1500-1800.
You do know that the human body can't drop more than 2 pounds of fat a week right?  (provided that person isn't severely obese)

So.. if you eat 500 calories a day, I'm willing to bet that you'd lose about half a pound a day, but not just of fat, of muscle.  So you'll have an even worse metabolism.  You'll gain the weight back, but only in fat, and then.. well repeat repeat repeat until your metabolism sucks and you can't figure out why you can't lose weight.

The only people here that will agree with you are the ones with EATING DISORDERS.

Please pick up a healthy and smart diet.  If not just for your weight, but also for your future health.
right now your bmi is 19.8-not underweight, but in the low end of the healthy range... there is no reason to try a drastic diet, especially at your weight when you should be trying to tone up to look the way you want, not lose muscle by starving yourself.  If you were to go on that restrictive diet, you may end up looking fatter at the lower weight than you do now, due to losing muscle that defines areas of your body.  And please take into account that your body fat % will likely go up, and that number matters more than what weight or BMI you have, as you could be thin with not much muscle, and a high body fat %... and that is unhealthy.

Edit: The lowest you'd want to go weight-wise is 122 lbs, or about 55.34 kilos, any lower than that and you are in the unhealthy range.  Also, you are more likely to have your weight go up and down alot more with drastic diets, as it messes with your body.  If you were to lose slowly (probably about .5-1lbs a week for how little you need to lose) you would be more likely to keep it off than have large, unhealthy weight fluctuations.

500 cals a day may work for you to take off the last few kilos but that is called a crash diet and you may end up doing long term dammage to your metabolism. Trust me... You are already on the low end of the scale and I say "if it ain't broke- don't fix it!"

If you are unhappy w/the way tour body looks then try and increase weight training and add some muscle to change the shape of your body.
Welcome to C-C dddsss,
It is recommended to never go below 1200 calories if you are a female, because your body will go into starvation mode and it is possible that you might gain weight, besides doing serious damage to your body. (1500 calories if you are male).

Your body needs at least 1200 calories per day to survive. Here is a very rough scientific break down provided by a dietician for a  5' 2", 19 year old female weighing approximately 100 pounds, sitting around all day and doing nothing:

-The heart needs 12% of the calories (144 cals)
-The kidney needs 12% of the calories (144 cals)
-The Liver needs 23% of the calories (276 cals)
-The brain needs 23% of the calories (276 cals)
-The skeletal muscle needs 30% of the calories (360 cals)

Take it from me you do not want to start the yo-yo dieting.  In twenty years you will be wondering what happened.  When I was in my twenties I only needed to lose 5 or 10 pounds and now I need to lose 70 more.
You would be better off to do some yoga or pilates or just walk than to eat only 500 calories a day and start down a road that a lot of us here have already been down.
Eat to nourish your body and treat it well now.
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

i hate this posts.
just eat 1200 a day and dont work out.
Hey there,

Thats really excessive.  Be careful, dont limit yourself that much.  That is really dangerous- make sure to get at least 1200 calories a day.  I know it is tempting to try to speed things up but you didnt gain the weight overnight and it isnt supposed to come off like that either.  Plus, just like some of the other responders said you cannot really lose that in fat it will be muscle and you dont want to be all flabby :)  Just workout and eat right and you will do great!!  Good luck!
No. I do not agree.  The BMI calculator is the one used by the World Health Organization and is an international standard.

500 calories a day will not provide you with enough nutrients and your bones and organs, especially your heart, will be damaged if you continue it too long.  Also, it's counter productive.  Your body will hang on to every bit of fat it can until it is forced to burn it, along with muscle and organ tissue.  The minute you eat anything extra, it will go straight to fat cells and you will regain incredibly fast.

So be sensible.  Use all the tools and information provided here (free of charge!) to guide you in making healthy choices.
I agree that BMI is not necessarily the best way of telling whether or not your body is where you want it.  That's the only point I agree with you on.

If you go on a crash diet, you're most likely to gain the weight that you lose back after you stop your diet.  To make it worse, you'll be losing some muscle mass that will probably come back as fat.

Limit yourself to 1200 calories per day and see if you lose the weight you want to at a slower rate.  Add a few hundred calories of exercise if you want to speed the process up a bit and keep more muscle.  When you're at the weight you want to be, or sometimes when you body decides that you're at the weight it wants you to be, then eat to maintain your weight.

To be honest i am not pro- anorexia, i think the standards of what the media portrays is disgusting. I assure you I am not underweight. I have fatty areas (mainly stomach) and do not feel comfortable in a swim suit.

I dont think im fat, im just not where i want to be. I want a flat toned stomach - i dont think anyone here could dare argue that a 21 year old should not have a flat stomach because its "unhealthy", what i am suggesting is that the scales are wrong - most active people are toned, it might reflect that they are underweight but when in truth they are far healthier than someone with a BMI of 21.

I dont find im hungry if i limit my calories to that level, i know it is not susainable as a life style, but their is a huge difference between weight maintainance and weight loss.

A diet is about cutting calories, acording to my recomended calorie allowance i should be eating 1700, u guys must know how much that is? All im saying is that everyone is different, different methods work for different ppl, when im hungry i eat when im not i dont, i dont ike to force food down my throat when im not hungry the problem is that ppl are brought up eating 3 big meals a day, and just carry that as a habit into adulthood. Some ppl are better suited to eating 5 small meals a day, others different plans. Im sure u can see the logic here. There is no point in forcing your body to eat, the reason so many ppl are so fat nowadays is because they dont listen to what their body tells them. They just go "Oh 1:30, lunch time" and dont actually ust wait until they should eat."

I wanna thank everyone who sent positive answers instead of  "Why not just get your unrepentant asses to a pro-ana site and leave us alone? "

I will raise my calorie intake, I do not want to mess up my metabolism, but is it possible that i require less? I just truly believe i will put on weight on 1700cal.

Also is it possible to ever reach my goal weight which is considered "unhealthy" by sticking to or just under my "recommended" calorie level. I only want to lose about 3 more.

If you want a flat stomach (which btw, is incredibly difficult to achieve), the best thing you can do is exercise. Eating 500 calories a day won't bring you there without causing you harm. And just losing 3 lbs probably won't make your stomach much flatter.

sorry i forget you guys work on pounds, i wanna lose 3 kilos more.
Thanks for the advice, i have however been told by a personal trainer that the only way to get a flat stomach is throu diet not exercise, as it does not matter how strong your stomach is if it is hidden underneath fat.
A "toned stomach" doesn't come from weight loss. It comes from exercise. "Toned" is the operative word there. If your muscles aren't exercised, they aren't toned. If you want them toned, exercise them. You'll have to feed your body enough so that the muscles can do what you want them to do, however, and I'm sorry, but 500 calories just isn't enough. Triple that *might* be enough, depending on how much exercise you get, but even 1500 calories, with exercise, might not be enough for an active 21-year-old.

If you "do not feel comfortable in a swim suit" even though you are on the low side of a healthy BMI, the problem isn't your body -- it's  your mind. IMHO, it's time for you to learn to love your miraculous body, however toned or untoned your stomach might be!
dddsss:  i think you're right, i have heard that first you need to get rid of the fat and then do exercise to tone up.  if you start doing crunches w/ fat on your belly, it will make it bigger.

BUT... you should also knowing that drastically decreasing your calorie intake will have the reverse effect that you want.  i mean, if you look at the children in africa that are starving, they all have bellies...it's your body's natural defense against starvation.

what i would do is eat a healthier amount of cals, drink plenty of water, and make sure you consume enough fiber.  you want a healthy tummy, not a malnourished one!

I have stopped the 500cal thing, i now know its stupid, I just thought that it would be easier than actually going on a diet.

The thing is I know im really unhealthly, i just moved to Dubai and pretty much never exercise due to the heat and the fact I leave for work at 7 and get home for 8 each night.  When im not working im pretty active always up for snowboarding, hikes, etc i just dont get the luxury of time anymore.

I think that fact that my stomach hungs over my bikini bottoms when i sit is disgusting, i dont have a mental problem, i just know i could be healthier, a lot healthier.

I actually think im taller than 5'8, i got measured 3 years ago when i was 18, so think i could be taller now.
its just simple and logic that a healthy diet wih plently of exercise gives u the best results to your body as it did for me
"I think that fact that my stomach hungs over my bikini bottoms when i sit is disgusting, i dont have a mental problem, i just know i could be healthier, a lot healthier."

The first statement directly contradicts the second. The third is correct, but not for the reason you think it is.

It's nice to be proven right.
Oh, and about the myth of flat stomachs...
