Okay so, I am tired of looking dull. I wear jeans and a tshirt...all the time. Some times i have a cute top on..but ..I only own three of those..lol

The problem is I dont know hwo to put outfits together. I wasnt raised with a mother so no one ever taught me. I have been tom boyish most of my life but I am coming out of it. My summer outfits are looking pretty "stylisH" but I cant seem to be "warm" and "cute", lol.

I want to keep my laid back type of style, but...dressen it up a little bit. I was thinking stuff like..wide legged jeans, heels, fitted long sleeve shirt and a scarf or wahtever..but..then the colors come into play. And i need more then one outfit then THAT. Can anyone help or give me suggestions or advice? Please and thanks :)

I always thought the big sweaters with long necks were really cute.

or the ones with long sleeves

The coats with the fur around the hood are also nice (and those boots that have the fur around the top).

Winter is a good time for nice clothes P:

Im in the same boat!

Id reccommend shopping around online at places like Jcrew.com or banana republic - granted, I can never afford any of their stuff, but it helps keep me up to date on styles/colors, so I know what to look for when I go shopping at cheapo places.

You might want to watch a few episodes of "what not to wear." Look for an epidsode featuring someone who has the same body type as you, so you can apply the fashion advice to yourself.

Also - this sounds super cheesy - get to know your "seasonal color palette." This site sucks but scroll about mid-page to the seasonal analysis part to see what colors look best with your hair/skin.

I'm also fairly simple when it comes to the majority of my clothes. Most of my clothes are nature colored cotton tops (browns, tans, blacks, greens, blues) that I wear with jeans. However, I make everything my own. For instance, I might stitch lace on the cuffs of my plain t-shirt sleeves or have a simple phrase printed on the front like "dudes hate me"...which is, ironically, a great way to get men to approach me. I also have a variety of unusual broches, necklaces and belts. I LOVE jackets and most of mine are bizarre, but don't look too crazy when paired with a simple outfit. I also have a couple pairs of simple boots and basic skirts, but tights can really add an edge. And I have lots of scarves, "sleeves"/gloves and winter hats that exhibit color and/or personality.

I'm about the same with my summer clothing. Really, the most I might do is wear interesting sunglasses, sandals, or have my hair in a unique style with obscure hair accessories.

These are just some ideas, but I must admit...most of the time I keep it very simple, knowing the best way to dress up an outfit is with a smile. I know...that was corny.

hahaha I think lorik's suggestions are awful. If you have no style, just read some fashion magazines. It's really easy to adapt the things you like from the runway to your life.

The easiest way though is just by adding accessories to your wardrobe. Buy some cute jewelry, scarves, broaches, etc. I like shopping at vintage shops to find unusual and cute jewelry and broaches. If you want to go simple, adding scarves is easy to do.

?!?! Comfort + attractive = win win in my book when it comes to clothes.

Dont listen to whats "in" or all that...just go with what looks nice and feels comfortable.

like this! !! (and you can even wear pants if you want to)

Its really hard to get much better than a cute sweater. On the right type its killer.

Hi, I went through the same thing a year or two ago. search for some fashion blogs online and read them. Go for the "casual" or "streetwear" types, not the runway fashion types lol. If there is a certain type of look you like, try to replicate it! You may feel a bit silly at first but remember that OTHER people do not know you do not normally dress this way. They will think these new outfits look perfectly normal on you.

really important!! search for some articles online called "dressing for your body type". these will give you general information on how to choose clothes that suit your body specifically. Try to figure out several clothing shapes/styles that flatter your shape, and then you can find endless variations on just those couple of styles and they will automatically look good on you. For example, I am an hourglass shape so many of my shirts are belted or cut to emphasize my natural waist, and I also stay away from puffed sleeves. lol

Finally, pay attention to what other people around you are wearing. I do not mean COPY them...but... it will give you ideas and you can do it all the time even when you are away from your computer. good luck!

edit: okay I forgot to add a couple of really crucial things that I did when I went about "building my wardrobe". the first is that I searched online for articles related to "building a wardrobe". lol! there's lots of advice on there. but anyway, as someone mentioned, the other important thing is to pick just several colors that you like and make those your core colors. You can get other colors occasionally but if you limit your colors you will end up being able to mix and match more.

Hi!  I have the same problem *sigh*.  I've lost all my weight and want to look cute now, but have no idea what to buy.  So many things that are "stylish" or "in" right now just don't look good on a lot of people.  I usually wear a lot of jeans, t-shirts and sweaters right now.  In the summer I usually just wear shorts or layered tanks.  I wish I could have my own personal stylist for a day to go shopping with me and tell me what to buy, lol.

There's a book that I want,  I think it's called "How to Have Style" by Isaac Mizarahi.  He's a designer and you can find a lot of his clothes and other things in places like Target.  I should have asked for that book for x-mas...

lorik-- all that is is a sweatshirt. She said she's looking for style.

Check out www.myshape.com - you put in all your measurments and it shows you all sorts of outfits that flatter your shape.  The clothes are too expensive for me but it gives great ideas.

You are on the tom-boy style of things right. If you love that tee look, then dress it up with a scarf, heels, blazer, jewelry and a cute hand bag or hobo bag. You can always sexy up your style by adding a few things to your dress wear. It's hard to find things that fit you. A nice pair of slacks, and a tee goes well too.. Those cute tees.. You can even pull off bones and skulls tees and make them look sexy and hot for you. Its all about what you are willing to add to your style. I like fashion from the 70s on up to the now. Skinny jeans aren't for everyone.. Just like.. Hip hugger's aren't for everyone either. My style may not be your type of style. You have to know what you want.

You are looking for a laid back type of style....

Keep your style on your level.

 Edit to add:
Girl, what are you talking about. You got some style going on. You just have to know how to put it together. You look great by the way. Keep up that good looking body. You have some fashion in you... I can see it.. You are so little.. CONGRATS.

U can dress up the look you got going now.

I actually really like Lorik's ideas. I love big, chunky sweaters in the fall and winter. Turtlenecks don't look good on everyone but I think they would look good on you.

Love wide leg jeans and also wide-leg cords for girls. If you wear wide-leg, go with a more fitted top (even just like a long-sleeved t-shirt) and wear a thin, vibrant colored winter scarf with it. Get a nice pair of cords and a couple of v-neck sweaters.

You would also look really good in straight-leg or skinny leg jeans and pants. You have a great, slim figure. I'm a huge fan of straight jeans (or skinny jeans just not TOO skinny/trendy looking) paired with a big chunky sweater like the first one on Lorik's link (the gray/white/black one). You would look good in really vibrant colors like deep purple, turquoise, really deep pink. Look for saturated colors.

Target actually has a lot of really cute winter clothes right now - chunky sweaters, skinny jeans, ballerina flats. I like the look of a short sleeved chunky sweater with a long sleeve t underneath. You can do a lot with the colors you choose and also adding things like a cool scarf in a contrasting color.

Another style that is sort of trendy and looks good on everyone is the open cardigan sweater - a longer cardigan without buttons. You can get it in gray or black and make it snazzy with a bright tank or t-shirt underneath. And wear it with jeans or pants or cords or whatever.

Also - shorter skirts (to the knee) with knee-high boots and tights are great for winter.... and never goes out of style. If you're into skirts. Tall boots also look great with skinny jeans or straight leg jeans tucked in to them. You can get some really cheap tall boots right now (I just got some black suede tall boots at Nine West outlet for $49).

As for stores, depends on your budget. Target, Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy, J Crew is good for cords and sweaters - pricey but sometimes has good sales.

I like Iorik's suggestions and think that they fit with the OP's questions quite well. Besides, albisam, you can add your own suggestions without attacking someone else's.

I'm a bit of a fashion disaster myself, but one of the best things I ever did (IMO) was to switch from wearing jeans everyday to other pants. All my pants are still comfortable, and they don't have to be dress pants. The same top can look dramatically different paired with something other than denim.

I'd suggest victoriassecret they are having a lot of sales and "free shipping" with purchases and they have a lot of tops and sweaters.

Like someone else mentioned you can dress up a pair of jeans with some cute pumps or high heel boots.

Try new things, you never know if it works for you until you try it.

amayou82- I am going to look into Victoria's as well. I didn't know they had free shipping..

Some quick suggestions.. from looking at your photos (you look like a natural brunette with dark brown eyes?) I would suggest wearing medium or cool toned colors versus warm (think earthy) toned colors as these last ones may wash you out.. again, hard to tell your skin tone from the photos but medium tones would be a safe bet... the best way out which tones look best on you is trying different clothes on! =)

Pants/Jeans - You can still wear denim but try to wear darker denim as it looks more polished and you can easily dress it up for going out with a cute jacket, boots/heels, jewelry, etc... also, try wearing pants/jeans that are straight through the leg versus bell bottoms.. you and I have the nice, big thighs (LOL), and straight leg pants create the illusion of a longer, leaner leg.. watch out for bell bottoms as they can make you look bigger than you are and also shorter..

Skirts - go for skirts with a soft A-line (not full A lines).. for more fitted skirts, make sure the length hits you at the knee or just above.. stay away from long skirts as they will make you look shorter..

You may think of yourself as a tom boy but you don't look like that! you have a cute little shape that could carry almost any style!

Good luck!

Go to the mall and look at how the mannequins are dress in age appropriate clothing stores.

Hmm - I like your sweaters and they look great on the skinny models, but would you extrapolate on who the right type is?

Aw, I thought lorik's suggestions were cute.

I noticed the sweater in the second link in his first post was very loose and didn't define a waist at all. Usually if you're a bit bigger it's important to define your waist, so more structured clothing is the way to go.

The OP seems small though (I haven't actually clicked on her profile), just judging by her profile picture. So I think his suggestions are good.

I love:
Cardigans and layers.
A blouse with a long comfy cardigan over it.
Sweater dresses paired with thick tights.
Argyle during the winter...sweaters, vests, socks, etc.
Scoop neck sweaters.
....there's so much!

For colors, I say go for what you like. I personally stick to browns, greens, and navy blue. I've also come to like that marigold color. I also lean towards small girly patterns, or sometimes strategically placed stripes on a sweater (not an entire striped sweater.)

trhawley (post #16) had a good suggestion. Do be careful though, some of those mannequins are put together terribly! You can find some cute combinations though.

Now I want to go shopping!

Congrats. You liked them. She said she wanted something different. I don't think that's much different than what she's already wearing.
