How fast did you/people start noticing the weight loss?

Quote  |  Reply
Hey everyone!

One of the reasons I always quit a diet i s because I feel like its not working. How long (days, weeks, months?) did it take for people to start noticing your weight loss or you? I have lost about 15 pounds (AND im 4' 10) but no one has noticed... kinda bummed.... any suggestions?

I felt the same way after I lost the weight but I think that there are reasons for people not mentioning it.  Guys don't say anything because then it may appear that they are checking you out and don't want you to think they are harassing you.  Females don't comment because often they are jealous.  I know when I noticed a colleague losing weight at first I was so jealous and didn't say anything but then I took a hard look at myself and realized I was being an idiot.  I wouldn't worry about it- if you have lost 15 pounds people notice but just may not say anything.... doing good!!

i never thought of it that way... thanks!

Thats always my downfall when i try to lose weight. I don't see any results and then i quit... because why should i not be eating what i want, if i am just going to look the same.

I really want and need to lose some weight, I'm starting to feel depressed about it, i hate looking at myself in the mirror. I know exercise is a huge part of this, i enjoy running, but the cold weather has made me stop that... I just don't want to fail this time... i am so tired of being ashamed of the way i look.  I hope this site can help, i don't know what else to do.

^^^ I used to be like that too.  For years, I would starve to lose weight, not see any results and quit.  This time I have decided that I am going to continue with it for the rest of my life.  I eat what I want within reason, I never deprive myself, I only drink water and hot tea and I exercise every day.

My mantra is "I may still look fat, but at least I'm working on it"... especially whenever I look into the mirror.

Hope that helps!
msmeg: i just looked at your profile and you sound a lot like me.... gosh high school could have been so much better if i wasnt overweight.... i know exactly how ure feeling... i also get so sad when i dont see the weight coming off as fast as i want or feel it should...esp if i am working really hard... but i have figured out that the one key thing to weight loss is persistence.... no matter if i feel like im not losing fast enough or i should give up bc im always going to be fat (that goes through my head a lot), i have decided im going to stick with it.... at least for  the next 3 months... if i can stick with it that long, then i wont quit... good luck with ure journey!

Georgia, It makes me feel so much better to know i am not alone! I think if i make it to where i only try to lose 1 lb a week (much more realistic than 5 or 10!) then i won't get so depressed when i don't see a huge change on the scale, and in the event that i do i can celebrate!

This has a lot to do with my mindset, i need to realize that for the weight to stay off i need to go slow and eat right and exercise regularly!

Thanks for the support, good luck with you as well!

The mindset is a huge deal with me also.  I have to keep telling myself as long as the number on the scale is going down, and not up, I will be satisfied. This mindset allows me to still enjoy SOME of the things I used to and not fall off the wagon completely.  Just keep plugging along, that is what I am doing.

Good luck!

People at work didn't start noticing my weight loss until I was down 40 lbs.  When I hit the 60 lb. mark, more people started commenting.  Now that I'm almost 80 down, people are starting to tell me to stop!

I know it's hard to stay motivated & want to quit.  So much of this work is mental.

Good luck!

PS - I started my weight loss program in late July/early August 2006.

I have a relative who has talked about losing weight for years. I never know what to say (one's inclination is always to say, you look fine - but that isn't being honest when the person is truly overweight.) So, I never know if I should say, Hey you've lost weight or not if I think she looks a little better. If she hasn't lost weight, she might be sad.

I just always try to encourage her to excercise by asking her to walk with me and I always try to take a healthy snack or dessert to her house when I visit.

I agree, wholeheartedly, that if one follows a healthy eating plan and exercises EVERY DAY, they cannot fail. The weight might come off slowly but it will come off. Even at a pound a week, 52 pounds thinner this time next year sounds pretty good, doesn't it?

Good luck to all who are seeking a healthier lifestyle, me among them.

Sue.......
I think when people start noticing weight loss is an individual experience.  Sometimes we carry weight differently from others.  For me, around the 35-40 pound mark, I got a few comments.  I think that as people have seen me continually go down, they are getting braver about saying something.  On the flip side, I have to deal with the fear constantly that if I fail, they will also notice that, too.  So I try to remember that this process that I am going through is personal-I am doing this for me! :0
a couple of people noticed at ~ 20lbs, but they were people i hadn't seen in months.  i've lost very gradually, and i moved to a new city after the first 10lbs, so most people don't know that i've gone from a 165lb tight size 12 to a 141lb size 8.

i don't care.  it's not about other people.  when i get into a size 6 pair of jeans, it won't matter if i'm the only one who knows it.
