You need to eat a healthy combination of carbs, protein, and fat and in the proper quantity for your size and exercise duration. Getting fast is about training to be fast, not eating to be fast. Interval training is an excellent way to increase speed.
I agree with trhawley. I'm not a super fast runner but I know that interval training really helps my time. I usually do two miles on the treadmill of running a quarter of a mile, then sprinting for a quarter mile, running, sprinting, etc (4x400's). You can do it on a track too of course.
Speed improvement. My suggestions would be:
1. Technique - make sure your running/sprinting technique is the best it can be - consult your coach.
2. Strength training - work your legs, make them stronger and more explosive with squats, lunges, step-ups, calf raises, etc.
3. Sport specific training - wind sprints, interval training (as suggested above), etc
4. Plyometrics. Lots of books out there on this - helps build up explosive starts.
Good Luck
