First, any cardio will help, as you'll be using your legs, plus encouraging general weight loss. You'll begin to lose fat everywhere, including thighs. To tone thighs, nothing beats squats and lunges (stationary, walking and jumping). Do not use thigh weight machines at the gym. There's two...the adductor and abductor (I think that's right). On one you press the weight pad in w/your thighs, the other you push out. These will bulk up your thighs, which is not what you want. If you belong to a gym, or have a knowledeable friend, ask them to show you how to squats and lunges correctly. That way you get the full benefit and protect your knees! Good luck!

I know you mean well, but this is definitely not true. Those machines are best used for maybe resting in between squats sets. I can't think of any practical use for them, especially in a weight routine. Additionally no one who is trying to lose weight is going to bulk up anything. You need to be eating OVER your calories expenditure to gain muscle mass.

I should have also said I'm in 100% in agreement with your squats and lunges suggestion.
Spiro is right its real hard to bulk up if you are on a calorie deficit. I've been doing weights for a year and my thighs are the same diameter but they actually are starting to get some "shape" and they don't flab around as much when I walk. I actually can wear shorts in the house now without being so self conscious about the jiggle.
I do squats both on the rack and also in a cardio class. Plies are good too. I don't use the abductor /adductor machine only because I don't feel it challenges me enough it seems too easy even at a very high weight.

Well, I'm in no position to argue w/you about those machines. I was told that by a trainer...but I know even the trainers disagree. And maybe he meant just me! I will add that I do kickboxing 3 days a week, vigorous elliptical 1 day, and a weight lifting class 1 day (w/lots of squats and lunges) and I've definitely seen improvement in my thighs.
glttr sounds like you're really getting moving!! I was in competitive Tae Kwon Do for about four years (as an adult) and was in the best shape of my life.
I'm not a huge fan of those weight training classes, personally. Of course I have not attended every one on the planet, but the ones I have seen focus on doing a lot of high reps which really isn't a good use of your weight lifting time.

I am always confused by all the controversy among personal trainers about low weight high reps vs actually working the muscle. Women really have to work hard to bulk up and I agree wy sit down and waste time lifting a weight that you could probably do for an hour with no muscle fatigue but you really aren't working IMHO.
Sure I don't want flab and I don't want to look like Arnold either - I just want to look good in a tank top and shorts. I want definition. I lift as heavy of weights as I can and do 8 - 12 reps for 3 sets. I am far from bulked up and I am also far from feeling comfortable in shorts out in public - but I will wear sleeveless in public!!
