How much fat should I eat per day?
Asked by anonymous on Oct 30, 2009 in Weight Loss

What percentage of calories need to come from fat, and what would you recommend as a maximum daily fat intake?

Answer

The Dietary Guidelines for American advises a fat intake of 20 - 35% of total calories.  Since fats provide 9 calories per gram, fat intake would range from 27 grams to 47 grams a day on a 1200 calorie diet.  But within your total fat intake, saturated fat should not contribute more than 10% of calories.  That means 13 grams of saturated fat on a 1200 calorie diet.  Saturated fat is found primarily in animal foods; try to get most of your fats from plants.  In addition, all people should avoid trans fat, an ingredient in processed food.
