how many grams of fat... or what percent of fat should you eat per day? My burn for today is 2400 (went for a 45 minute walk and am going to boxing class after work)... So I am eating about 1500 calories today. I have logged what I intend on eating this afternoon and evening and my fat is at 28% and 49 grams. My ration for the day is 50c/22p/28f.. I know I need to increase my protein and lower my fat, but all of the fat I eat comes from olive oil and/or olive oil based salad dressing, almonds and dairy.

My goal is to lose weight (10-15 lbs) by the end of July. My stats are.. female 27 y/o, 5'2", 141 lbs.

I read you could only have around 35-40 grams of fat per day. Of course having less than that or a little more is not going to break any goals.

there's a link to dietary guidelines for a healthy diet

Okay so I am a bit higher than I should be.. so I will have to watch that. Thanks for the responses.

wow - that seems like a lot - when i was a member of the danish weight consultants, i only had 15 grams a day = 3 tea spoons! which is what is required for the body to absorb the fatsoluble (is that what you call it in english?) vitamins.

The American Heart Association and the FDA suggest that for heart health, that no more than 25 - 30% of your calories should come from fat.  So to determine the number of grams, multiple your intake calories by 25%, then divide that result by 9, the number of calories in a gram of fat.  In your case, you said you eat 1500 calorie, to that would be (1500 * .25) / 9 = 41.66 g.  The American Heart Association also says that you should try to keep saturated fats to no more than 5% of your daily calories, monounsaturated fats to no more than 10% and polyunsaturated fats to no more than 10%.  That works out in your case to roughly 8 g saturated, and 16 g each mono and polyunsaturated.
