CAN A 173 POUND FAT GIRL EFFECTIVELY PARTICPATE IN KARATE? Are there any sports for fat people, I want to get involved in some type of sport, beginning run/walk cub, i just need something!!!HELP!!!

Um...sorry to say this but you can do anything you want to do...Just because you are "fat" doesn't mean you should limit yourself. ...lol, too funny....If you want to do karate then go and do it.....

yeah, provided that you're basically healthy (ie: no heart problems), there are no limits.  just check around and see what's available in your community (sounds like you're looking for something social as well as physical).  community centers, colleges, the Y, etc. will have recreational team sports, clinics, etc. 

there's a begin-to-run program in my journal that you can cut and paste if you want.

I started a kung fu class a couple years ago and I weighed 165. You can definitely participate and even excel!  We had an assistant instructor (female) that was close to 200 lbs and she was great.  I lost 30 pounds doing martial arts.  It's so fun and interesting that you forget you're working out.  I highly recommend it. 

When I took Taekwondo in my teens, we had a guy start who weighed 300 pounds. It was amazing the transformation that took place over a year wtih that guy.

 

As long as you don't have major health issues or joint issues, I say go for it. At least check out a class and see if it is best for you.


And unless you are very short, 175 is overweight,  but probably not obese.

Karate is awesome and you should DEFINITELY GO FOR IT! Also, in a similiar form, kickboxing is a really amazing work out.

Do whatever you want! And if anyone gives you a hard time, you probably have a heck of a lot more momentum on them and could do some serious damage. ;-P

What? Fat people aren't "disabled" or "not allowed" to participate in a sport - go for it!

I almost screamed with excitement when I read your post! I've been doing shotokan karate for a few months now and when I started I was 180lbs. And since then I've become the biggest advocator of karate - I LOVE karate and my weight is not an issue there.

In my dojo, a considerable percentage of the people there are overweight/obese. Don't worry about what people think and just go for it!

Seriously, I am so so happy that I gave it a go despite the fact that I was considerably overweight. Since I've started, I've become more toned/cardiovascularly fit/coordinated.

So please give karate a go, you won't regret it! Karate Rocks!!

Also, if you're after a good running program, I'm doing Couch to 5K (5 Kilometres) which is a beginner's running program designed to get you literally from the couch to running 5K in as little as 9 weeks. I'm doing it and have discovered that I really like running. Check it out on www.c25k.com

Of course you can do sports if you want to... your weight isn't a 'handicap' unless you have arthritis or heart disease or weigh about 300 pounds + (if you get heavy enough, weight IS a huge handicap... just ask my DH) but under 200 no way. You can do whatever you want to do sweety, don't let self-consciousness stop you.

I was around your weight and played soccer with no problems. I could run way more than most of the skinny girls on the team.

Girl, your username should be CURRENTbeauty.  Catch my drift?  Last year I choreographed a musical and taught hip hop/jazz dance class at 200 lbs. (5'5) Last month I climbed a mountain and biked 30 miles.  Go do it!

I start kickboxing at about 95 Kgs in Uni, and I was whooping some butts! When I got down to my lower weight, I was a force to be reckoned with. Go for it!!!

 

 

I used to work out with a 230 lb woman; she out-ran me every darn time. 

You can do whatever you want to do!  Everything takes practice & building of strength, regardless of your weight.
