Fat & Sassy 53 year old needs suggestions on physical activities

Quote  |  Reply

OK....I'm 53 years old and trying to lose 70 lbs!  Have some physical issues....my foot was torn from the socket in a motorcycle accident back in 93 and I don't have full range in motion, just alot of swelling and arthritis.  This makes alot of activities difficult such as elipticals, running, bicycles, climbing and descending stairs, and the like. Used to be one of those 5'7" 120 lb ladies that couldn't gain a pound 20 years ago!  Ha!

Got any suggestions????

Have you tried Aquafit?  I love the deep water version and it puts no pressure on joints but is a great workout - you don't even realize you are actually sweating.  I also use some of these chair exercises  for when I'm stuck at my desk working.  http://www.livewellagewell.info/study/2007/12 -ChairExercisesUGA113006.pdf

I have been recovering from knee issues and I used a video called Chair Aerobics for Everyone that really helped get my heart rate up even while I couldn't do much standing up.  You may need to adapt a couple of the exercises to accomodate your particular pain points.  There are other videos in the series, but I haven't tried those.

Thanks for the info...didn't know there was such a thing as Chair Exercises.  Will try that and the Aquafit too.  Thanks to you both.

Swimming, weights, yoga, tai chi, nordic cross-country ski machines (very low impact), walking. Lots of people have found that regular exercise can actually help relieve arthritis pain.

There are a couple of threads which have discussed exercise with mobility issues:
