fave not so normal fruit?
anyone have any suggestions for fruits besides the usual apples, bananas, oranges? suggestions for how to eat/store/prepare them would be nice too. (:
canned manderine orange slices with a tbsp of low fat cream cheese, heaven! Frozen raspberrys with 1 tbsp of chocolate chips, suck on them and it's like ice cream...
frozen fruits in the freezer section at your grocery store or buy fresh berries and freeze them yourself (I do whichever is cheaper at the time)
I love pears. Good amount of fiber and fill me up pretty good.
Grapes are good too. Pretty sure you can freeze these for a little frozen snack.
Canned fruits are convienent but watch out for the ones in heavy syrup. Look for no sugar added cans.
kiwis :) yum. i dont know when they are in season though.
fresh pineapple is delicious with some mint on top.
I'm finding mini-seedless watermelons all over right now. Yum. Cut in half and it has it's own bowl. Nothing to wash. How convenient is that!
In the winter I like kumquats. No preparation necessary, just pop the whole thing in your mouth. Very refreshing.
Pomegranates are another yummy winter fruit. A terrific combination is a spinach salad with satsuma wedges and pomegranate seeds. Or make a salsa by combining the seeds with orange segments, diced red onions, lime juice, and a bit of chili powder, serve over fish or a grain.

Pineapple
Kiwi
Star Fruit
any berries (black, straw, blue, ras)
mango
melons (water, honey)
You can put most of your fruit in yogurt, or prepare them on or in muffins and pancakes. Or smoothies! =]
Some of my favorite fruit are peaches and mangoes - you could try those too!
I second the idea of frozen fruits, unless you're in a very cold area. And as for odd fruits, I like canned pumpkin (yes, squash is normally considered a vegetable, but scientifically, anything with seeds is a fruit.) Blackberries are delicious, too.
Its really all about experimenting to find what you like. If you see an ugli fruit or kiwano in your local store's produce section, give it a try. Also, try doing different things with your regular staples - try your fruits frozen (some taste better, some get bitter and gross, its a matter of hit and miss). Try your berries with balsamic vinegar or other low-cal sauces.
Persimmons (aka sharon fruit or kaki) - yum.
Cut out the core like you would on a tomato. Slice it, and eat it. No need to peel it, but you can if you want.
They should be slightly soft to the touch, not hard. If they're hard, give them a few days to ripen. The taste is something between a fig and a mango, and they're quite sweet.
My favs are pears, kiwi and plums.
Papayas, plums, prunes, pears. P to the fourth power!
Papayas, pineapples, kiwis, lychees, peaches and mangoes. :D
peaches, kiwi, mangos (best sliced refridgerated with shredded coconut and a little cinnamon), papaya (i like the pink flesh ones the best), dragon fruit (eat just like a kiwi, dont eat the skin), asian pears ( so good), blueberries and rasberries, cherries. yum SOOO many good fruits besides banana, orangles, apples :)
This year I've gone through a fruit sampling spree and have found all sorts of fabulous treasures. The listed are my favorites:
- Persimmons! Sooo good
- Asian pears (they're round like an orange)
- Plumcot (hybrid plumb and apricot)
- Acai Berry (hard to find and a bit expensive)
- Clementines (cute little oranges full of flavor)
- Mangos and Papayas (had never had them before)
- Rosetta apple (Little tiny apples with pink/red flesh)
frozen mango chunks are amazing, and you can buy them pre-cut and everything.

I love fruit of all kinds. I buy what I see in the ads because that generally means it's in season. Right now I have
Fresh:
- acorn squash
- braeburn apples
- navel oranges
- black grapes
- grapefruit
Frozen:
- peaches
- blueberries
- blackberries
- raspberries
- and I think strawberries
Canned in it's own natural juice:
- fruit cocktail
- pineapple
- peaches
- pears
- applesauce
I also love:
- mangos
- papayas
- kiwis
- bananas
- cherries
- watermelon
- honeydew
- cantaloupe
- avocados (this is technically a fruit)
- cucumbers (also technically a fruit)
- nectarines
- tangerines
- plums
- pears
There are so many others. I like to challenge myself sometimes to bring something home from the produce section that I've never eaten before. I love to put fruits into a green salad with some kind of a sweet vinaigrette dressing, like raspberry. I love to add mangos and avocados to tacos or to salsa to add a sweet punch. I like to make smoothies with yogurt and milk, and tons of fruit. I like to make my own jam so it's low in sugar and then add it to a turkey sandwich (hey if you like cranberries with your turkey, there is no reason why you wouldn't like this). The only kind of fruit I can think of that I don't like is tomatoes. And I still like them in salsa or other kinds of sauces or soups, or sundried in a salad. I just don't like the consistency of them enough to put a slice on a sandwich or eat one raw.
My fiance loves rambutan- you can find them in Asian markets. He says it tastes like lychees. It's a 'white, sweet succulent meat with the consistency of a gummy but almost with a pear and a honeydew sensibility but it's totally not like any of those things. It's a squishy fruit'. < Straight from the horse's mouth.
I've grown fond of chopping up a prickly pear and tossing it into my yogurts with some cinnamon and splenda.
And others like lychee, persimmons, grapefruit, prunes, kiwi, and my absolute favourite... Pumpkin. : D
Tamarillo: slice in half, sprinkle with a little sugar, and eat with a spoon. Very delicious.
