Favorite Horror Movies
Thought of this cause I'm watching The Shining right now... what's your favorite? Or the one that scares you the most?
For me it's The Exorcist. I still can't watch it all the way through. I prefer the older horror movies to the new "torture porn" genre, but that's just me.
My favourite is definitely The Shining.
I also liked The Skeleton Key, but everyone else I know hates it.
Nightmare on Elm Street.... yes, I know it's cheesy and kinda lame, but as a child that grew up with night terrors, I find it an intriguing concept.
As for what scares me, well, not much. I'm getting my master's in Criminal Psychopathology, so horror movies are more like research to me (expect for, like you mentioned, modern slasher films.)
Saw is probably the closest I've come to being frightened by a movie (unless you count Beetlejuice when I was 6).
Freaks. It's unsettling and laughable at the same time, which is a good thing for me because I'm very easily scared by horror films.
The one that scares me the most that I've seen is probably 28 Days Later. I only made it through the first 20 minutes before I bade my friends goodnight.
Has anyone seen The Antichrist, van Trier's new movie? It's so disgusting. I went to see it only knowing that van Trier (one of my favorite directors) made it, so I wasn't expecting a feel good movie by any means but I definitely didn't anticipate a gore-fest. Apparently he wrote it when he was suffering from a really severe case of depression. I think it shows. The is a film made by someone who was both wrestling with some pretty terrifying inner demons and lacking the hope to win that match.
OP: Elves Rule!
Edit to add: Invasion of the Body Snatchers-That one's fun to debate the meaning of.
Candyman (still won't say it 5 times!)
When a Stranger Calls ("Have you checked the children lately?")
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Tremors (more funny than scary..& it has Kevin Bacon in it ;-)
My fave is the original "Nightmare on Elm Street", although "Night of the Living Dead" is a true classic. I'll also go with "The Shining" - nobody writes a good psycho-horror flick anymore, not like that.
Scariest? For me, anything with an evil clown ("IT") - but that's kind of redundant, as all clowns are evil.
Heh. Just watched The Shining. Some of the images from that movie definitely stick with you, that's for sure.
Scariest movie...that's a tough one. It? The mini-series? Great first episode, but the rest of the series sucked, in my book. Not really scary, though.
I'm trying to think of a movie that was so scary that I wouldn't watch it again. Although it's all camp, Creepshow of all things scared me when I saw it when I was a kid.
I'm going to have to go with The Last Unicorn.

For a coulrophobe an episode of Bozo the Clown is scary.

I associate Bozo the Clown with my grandmother's house, since that's the only place where I watched him. Wanted to get stuff on his show...

omg I'm so glad I'm not the only one who won't do this...I can say it 4 times, then I keep looking behind me and can't say the last one XD
When a Stranger Calls also really scares me. I used to babysit a lot!
Alien by a long shot was the scariest for me. It was so totally different than anything done before that. I'm thinking the Shining would be #2 for me.
A movie that disturbed me more than scared me was The Ring. It stuck with me a little too much.
The Shining
Saw II (I'm not even a fan of the Saw movies)
The Halloween movies
I really like the book It, but I've never seen the movie. I heard it wasn't that good.
I just saw the movie Paranormal Activity this weekend. I didn't find it scary at all while watching it, but I was so paranoid at night!
Scary movies are the bomb.
I really love the old school Halloween movies. So cheesy. So awesome. I also really like Rob Zombie's versions. He's super twisted and I love it.
I don't know if Hard Candy counts as a horror movie per se...but it's definitely disturbing and I LOVE LOVE that movie.
I recently saw Let the Right One In and liked that one quite a bit too.

Alien's a great candidate. Great movie.
The Ring...was unnerving, but...I don't know...scary, yes...scariest? I don't know.
That's the word for The Ring ... unnerving. Definitely not scariest.
When I was 16, I watched "American Werewolf in London" starring David Naughton. Scared me!
Favorite movie = (original) Night of the Living Dead
I don't get scared (although I want to) by movies but I think a movie that did a GREAT job at building tension was the French film "Inside".
The lead-up to the ending of Silence of the Lambs is pretty fun...
To me, Child's Play was the one that had the most "left over" scared. Meaning, it scared me for years and years after I saw it. Not the first one, but the following ones where Chucky has his face all hacked up.
Another one was Pet Cemetary.
I saw Paranormal Activity as well. It didn't have any scary characters, but it was very creepy. I screamed at the end (and I have never screamed in a movie theater before!). :P
