Favorite Late Night Low Calorie Snacks
I am plagued by the late night munchies and looking for some new low calorie snacks. Anyone want to share their favorites?
Watermelon or Frozen cup of fat free chocolate pudding! Watermelons have been so sweet this year and are definately fixing my sweet tooth! When chocolate is necessary, I love a FF chocolate pudding cup that I have frozen for an hour or two. It is just like a creamy chocolate ice cream cup that is only 80 calories! (and sometimes the center is not frozen yet so you get a nice soft cold pudding center!)
Something salty? Orville Red... Kettle Corn Popcorn 98% fat free packson only 15 calories a cup. So when I feel the need to actually stuff my face, I can eat tons of the popcorn with no guilt!
Michelob Ultra.
(90 cals for a 12 oz. serving and it"ll put you to sleep, you can't snack when your sleeping. ;-)
Disclaimer:
- NEVER DRINK AND DRIVE!!. You will end up killing yourself, or worse, murder someone else. Don't be stupid. If you're going out and plan to drink, give the car keys to someone else and take a Taxi back home.
- If the law in your country says you're too young to drink, DON'T.
- Do not drink too much. Excessive consumption of alcohol WILL cause irreperable harm to your body and may be lethal.
- If you have a problem to stop drinking, seek professional help.
I've been a late night snacker for years and hate this problem. I don't usually go to bed until after 2am so it can be up to 8 hours since dinner. You get hungry. My vice was cereal, figuring I was just getting my breakfast early. However, being as it's late and I'm sedentary, it's not good to eat that kind of stuff.
My problem and most snackers problems are portion control. When you snack, you usually have a whole Bag of something and don't eat just a little bit. You eat until you stop feeling hungry or it's gone. I've gone to using little snack bowls, little ones you would feed your dog from, and telling myself that's all I get.
Grapes are good for cravings and I've taken to nuts which are good to kill the hunger (remember just to eat a small handful). Also, no sugar added fudge pops are a good chocolate item. These aren't indulgences by any means but if you get your body out of the habit of eating sweets or large quantities that late, you'll notice the cravings aren't so bad. And you don't see it on the scale in the morning. The trick is to get your mind back in control and not your stomach (sound like a recording, don't I). Train your brain not to crave the bad stuff.
Or maybe we should just all go to sleep!
SF Chocolate pudding! Or if you're up for the sugar, 100 calorie packs. They're great for that late night sweet craving. Just don't go overboard.
New store bought favorite!:
Weight Watchers Candy Bar Ice Cream Bars
150 calories and it's basically a snickers ice cream bar! And the stats aren't bad!
Frozen bananas. About 100cal for a decent sized one and I think bananas are supposed to help you sleep... though I can't remember where I read that, so don't quote me! :)
30 m&m's are 100 or so calories and, to me at least, way better that a 100 calorie pack.
Or I'll have a 60 cal pudding or 2 reduced fat oreos and a small glass of skim milk.
shirataki noodles with tomato sauce or paste (unsweetened)
sleepytime tea
cucumbers
sugarfree jello

Good "food for thought", jjasperse! I like your message of portion control and looking at the types of foods being eaten late in the night.
My thought is this: If I am truly hungry, why wouldn't I eat a meal? If you're up 8 hours after your last meal, sounds like another small meal of real food 3-5 hours after dinner is in order.
When people say "I'm hungry late at night" why are they eating dessert/chips/alcohol (with or without a lot of calories)? That doesn't sound like hunger, that sounds like craving. And as you said, jjasperse, unhealthy habits can be broken. Cravings are resistable - we do not have to give in to our impulses!
Learning the difference between genuine hunger and habitual craving has been a very important task of mine in this journey to health and weight-loss.
