Favorite places to shop healthy in the Steel City?

Quote  |  Reply

So where are your favorite healthy shopping locales in the area?  I am a huge fan of Trader Joes...East End Food Co-op and Stan's Fruit Market in the Strip District.

What are some your favorites?

Can't stand the "traditional stores" -- love to go to farmer's markets

I haven't found any farmer's markets I'm happy with...they advertise local produce, but often they mean local as in Florida or California rather than local to Honduras.  This summer...when my own zucchini and squash where just starting to take off after transplanting in May a farmer tried to tell me that his zucchini was fresh...I looked at him and asked when he planted them, saying mine hadn't even blossomed yet.  He looked around and said I was right...they weren't his...and then he asked me to leave his stand.

That was enough for me!

As a broke college student, I love Stan's Market. I do feel like a lot of the time their stuff is borderline rotting, but for the price I pay I don't really care!

Do you know if their produce is there is local?

Honestly...I don't think that it is local.  There is little to make me believe that they are growing artichokes and yams around here...lol.  I agree with you about Stan's sometimes...they do have some questionable looking zucchini on occasion, but for the price you can't beat them!

The best place for the local-vore is probably East End Co-op...which isn't cheap, but has a great selection of local and organics.

It does depend on your definition of "local" :)  I tend to hang around the slow food pittsburgh site (www.slowfoodpgh.com) and check out local foodie stuff.  Plus, I hooked up with their laptop butcher shops - I went for the local, stayed for the taste.  I didn't think there could be a difference in how meat tastes depending on how it was raised, but there you go - grass fed beef is yumm!

Very cool site J-snyder...I'd never heard of it before.  You're right though...as a former 4Her who grew up on grass fed cattle, the difference in flavor is tremendous.
