I saw some bags of frozen shrimp at Trader Joe's, and thought that would be a great thing to get and keep in my freezer.  We will probably pick some up in the next day or two.

Other than adding shrimp to a spinach salad, any recommendations of low-calorie ways to eat shrimp?

Things to pair it with?

What are you favorite things to do with shrimp?

NOTE: SHRIMP AND CHOLESTEROL .....

When it comes to heart health, shellfish - including shrimp and lobster - are considered, on a par with skinless poultry when you look at the potential blood cholesterol-raising abilities of different foods. Indeed, shrimp and lobster have the same CSI as skinless chicken or turkey. The crustaceans come out better than lean red meat because they're so low in saturated fat.

it's not low calorie, but i recently had this shrimp alfredo that was out of this world..God I love shrimp.
My favorite thing to do with shrimp is to put one on a leash and walk it around town.

my mom sometimes adds shrimp to angelhair pasta with a little garlic butter sauce. it's pretty good, but i cut butter out of my diet so i haven't had it in eyons.

if that's too high cal for you, you could buy one of those shrimp rings and the shrimp dipping sauce is soo good, but i'm not sure about the nutrition in it. you could always just eat the shrimp without sauce, i do.

shrimp and rice would be a good dinner idea. or maybe taking a whole wheat tortilla with tomatoes, or whatever veggies you want and adding some shrimp. that would be interesting.

I really really want to figure out how to make a shrimp tikka masala (indian food). I love it at this one restraunt... but i know they use heavy cream in making it...

Im thinking cooking it with buttermilk / tomato sauce with spices might do it.

Also considered chopping the shrimp up in a blender and adding eggwhites to make shrimp patties (with other herbs / veggies in it).

Then, a shrimpy stew might be good. Maybe cut it up into smaller chunks and try to feature it more in each bite that way.

Or! Shrimp eggwhite omelette! That might be a good idea, tons of protein, low calories.

Hmm, or, use the shrimp in some type of baked dish. Cut it up into smaller chunks again, then add eggwhite and buttermilk / spices with chopped up cauliflower? Pour that into a small dish and bake it that way? (I did something like that with just cauliflower which made a great low-cal side).

Shrimp sandwich might be nice also, or a shrimp wrap (those lower cal wraps you can buy). Shrimp salad? Use yogurt instead of mayo? Would have to spice it up and add herbs, but would probably be good that way (or could do the same thing in a type of dip for chips).

eat :D haha.

I really like to just sautee shrimp up along with some vegetables and soy sauce, and maybe some barbecue or sweet & sour. it's great over rice or pasta.

Im not a cook so I boil it and keep it in the fridge.  Then I'll take some and add black beans, raw diced onions and I imagine lime and cilantro suggested by another member would be a great touch.

Thanks, everyone .... yum yum yum!

if you're looking for some sweet shrimp dish, i have one. fry the shrimp in Sprite. (yeah--you heard me right. Sprite, the soft drink.) i know that the sprite may up the cals. but it's the BEST shrimp meal i ever ever had in my life. it's perfect with rice. my mom is the master chef when it comes to the dish. it just tastes so sweet. or when i have some leftover shrimp, i do an omelet with shrimp and sliced onions. or bake the shrimp? aarrrr... im confused now. what, which? anyhow, i like shrimps. how about kebabs? with yummy veggies? that will give you that ol' barbecue-ey feel.

^-^ whichever u choose, i hope u enjoy your shrimp!! and if u discover some recipes please share it with us. ^-^

All I can think of are things you should NOT do with shrimp!!  Fried, alfredo, buttery...

Mosh that comment deserves some acknowledgement.  That was pretty funny.

Edit:  Oh jeez I just thought of a good one.

My Dad makes fantastic Jambalaya with shrimp and chicken and sausage.  Leave out the sausage and its pretty low cal, or use turkey sausage.  Its got rice and a tomato and chicken broth base, with a lot of chopped up peppers, onions, garlic, celery... its amazing.  And filling.

Also a shrimp gumbo would be like a soup, also with rice and broth-based.

Must be all the swimming exercise.
I usually either eat it in a salad (with capers... mmm) or make a simple stir-fry with whatever veggies I have on hand, soy sauce, and some chili peppers, served over rice.

The dish I made last night - with chicken sausage - would work great with shrimp - instead or in addition to - the chicken sausage:

zucchini, onion, garlic - stir fry it. Add in 2 large diced tomatoes and 1 cup chopped parsley, toss until warm. Then toss with pasta and a little paremesan. Also add in some kalamata olives if you like them.

And I posted a recipe a few weeks back, something I got watching the food network... it's a saffron-zucchini couscous dish, with tons of fresh parsley. I added shrimp to it, to make it a meal not a side dish. It was excellent. I'm sure you could search and find it in the Foods forum.

I had a great salad the other day at my favorite local restaurant. I am hoping they put it on the menu permanently. It had spinach, fresh corn, tomatoes, red onion, and sauteed shrimp. The best part was that they drizzled a little bit of the butter from the shrimp on to the salad, wilting the spinach. Yeah, a bit of extra calories, but mmmm... it was worth it. Kinda like the pasta/butter/spinach idea, but without the pasta!!

Hmmm... I bet this dish would be good with shrimp added: saute shrimp, sliced carrots and a heaping handful or two of sage leaves in butter. That's one of my favorite dishes for fall/thanksgiving time, when sage is what you crave....

My favorite recent discovery is Shrimp in Paper. It's quick, easy and healthy:

Peel two firm apples (such as Gala) and wrap them in foil. Bake in a 350 oven for 35 minutes.  Meanwhile, peel and devein 8 shrimp, set aside.  Cut two 13" x 18" sheets of parchment paper (you can also use aluminum foil) into a heart, keeping shapes as large as possible (try to keep 18" width). Brush one side of each heart with egg whites.

Unwrap baked apples and mash them in a bowl with a fork. Heat oven to 400°F. Spoon 1/2 cup mashed apples into a rectangle in the center of one half of each heart. Top with 4 shrimp. Season with salt and pepper.  Fold heart, crimp edges to seal and bake 6 to 8 minutes on a cookie sheet. Transfer to plates and open right before serving.

You can also add some Gruyère cheese on top of the shrimp, but I find that to be too heavy and fattening!  This makes for a nice, light, healthy dish.  Bon appetite!
Oh, yum, people!!!!!
shrimp are wonderful :o)  i buy them just about every week.  sometimes i make a stir fry with veggies, a bit of peanut or sesame oil, and low sodium soy sauce.  i also put it in pad thai, rice stick noodles are pretty good for you and recipes for it are pretty easy to find.  you can sautee them and put them on pasta.  you can cook them and serve them cold with a little cocktail or tartar sauce.  cocktail sauce isn't bad, but you can always do ketchup with horseradish if you're worried about it.  i make really low calorie tartar sauce with fat free mayo, dill relish, and a bit of lemon juice.  ummm... that's all i can think of off the top of my head.  enjoy your shrimp!!!!

This is my current fav recipe for shrimp. I use less shrimp and add snow peas and asparagus and serve over a cup of rice. Yum!!

I always have frozen cooked shrimp in the freezer!  I will mix them with a frozen veggie/pasta or veggie/rice blend - (the kinds without sauce) and either toss it with some lowfat italian dressing,  or just a little parmesan cheese - , or shrimp fajitas with lots of veggies.
Quick stir fry with sesame seed oil and broccoli...yummy!
I toss the peeled and veined shrimp with 1 tbs Olive Oil, 1 tsp Old Bay, 1 tsp Paprika (per pound shrimp) and then grill.  Sometimes saute.  Squeeze fresh lime juice right before serving.

Shrimp is best FRESH, so try to visit your local seafood market and buy LOCAL.  Farm-raised asian shrimp aren't nearly as yummy.

I take my shrimp, fresh or frozen, doesnt really matter..

season it with garlic pepper, and put it on skewers and grilled them...

when they're off the grill I squeeze lime juice on top while they're hot.. I usually eat this with wild rice...  its really good...
Molly, since you're ALL ABOUT vegetables, you might like this :)  I love to make a shrimp marinara sauce that's also packed with veggies.  Just take some Hunt's no-salt-added tomato sauce, and simmer it with whatever veggies you like.  I use broccoli, zucchini, mushrooms, chopped carrots, minced garlic, some oregano, and a pinch of Splenda because I like a little sweetness.  Then add some boiled shrimp (or you could microwave them) and serve over whole wheat pasta.  It makes a nice chunky sauce that's kind of like a ragu.  A great way to get both protein and veggies, and a healthy dose of lycopene from the tomato sauce.  It's also awesome over... you guessed it, SPAGHETTI SQUASH!
