What is your favorite "non-traditional" Exercise?
I generally get fairly bored with traditional exercise routines, and I have a couple of fairly serious health concerns, so I have been experimenting with things I enjoy that are definitely workouts, but that I findfun. I am a biology student so I hike uphill reasonably hard and then walk back slowly with my plant guides etc. I also pick wild berries (right now blackberries, soon blueberries which are much easier on the skin I am totally torn up right now from the thorns!) which is quite a work out especially for my back. I have several sore muscles that I didn't even know I had. I am doing bio-monitoring, which involves walking up current, in waders, and holding a 25x4 foot net which collects all the stuff in the river (fish, branches, plant life, bugs) and can get really heavy. What do you do that is quite a workout that people wouldn't necessarily think of as heavy physical activity?
I like to belly dance- it's quite the ab workout but very fun.
I do alot of yardwork-pulling weeds, gardening, laying down rock. I've even put in patios and poured my own pavers.
Swimming is a fave of mine also.
My sister used to belly dance and absolutely loved it. I prefer to be torn to shreds by blackberry thorns, she prefers to dance with a sword on her head, it's all good.
mowing my lawn !
I have this little app for my iPhone to help lose weight, its lists hundreds of activity's and how much you burn doing them. now that I know mowing my lawn burns 350 calories I look forward to it now ![]()
I'm totally with you bmfan77! I LOVE to push mow lawns. I live in an apt right now, so no yard of my own, but I go to my parent's house and can spend all weekend push mowing their 7 acres.

helping around the farm! lifting bales of hay, bags fo feed, concrete bags, wodden poles, mending fences, shoveling manuer etc. Haven't gotten into working horses yet, but plan on it soon!
I LOVE playing with my nieces and nephews - they are all under 10, with 3 toddlers. My husband and I have no children (yet) so we love having them spend the weekend with us. Whenever they're over, I know I burn an extra 200-300 calories a day just chasing around after them! They're a riot!

I am not ashamed to say that sex is a good workout for me! Makes me feel much better afterward than regular exercise does! haha
My neighbor has a three-year-old boy so sometimes we play tag with him and he loves it! Makes me run all over the place!
I LOVE DOING BODY COMBAT! it´s an aerobic style of exercise with something of box and lots of other things, you can burn from 600 to 800 calories per hour.
here is a video with the example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cJs-FF4xpM

I'd say BodyCombat belongs in the traditional exercise category (aerobics/martial arts). But I agree it's loads of fun and a great workout.
Ultimate frisbee, hands down. Or any sort of childhood sport like kickball or something. Oh, and rollerblading.
I don't know that it's all that "non-traditional," but my favorite way to get my exercise is to go hiking/backpacking. A good long hike can take several hours, and assuming there is some incline, my heart gets going and by the end of the hike my legs are jello, I've consumed 3-4 liters of water, I've sweat way more than I care to, and my legs & core are well-worked from supporting 20-40 lbs of gear on my back. I also hike with poles, so my arms are moving constantly while I walk.
The best part is that I get a solid 4-7 hours of heavy exercise that I don't focus on, because I am busy exploring a new part of California that I've never been to, seeing the flora & fauna all around, checking out the great views of the landscape, and watching where I step so I don't fall!!

Fishing! You would be surprised what a workout it can be. Plus, you get the bonus of catching fresh fish for dinner, which is VERY calorie friendly. I know it's not everyone's thing, but I like it.

I went shark fishing with my bf a few weeks ago. The spastic arm movements I made while I did some type of frantic burpee when I leaped into the air [screaming] when they pulled in a shark..yeah, I can see it as being exercise.
I caught nothing that day..but a good buzz! ;)
